Gretsch "barn find" Last viewed: 5 hours ago

Dad rescued this red sparkle drum set from a derlict house about to be bull-dozed that was in a highway easement by the road & bridge company dad was a surveyor for. This was in 1984. He used them as a practice kit for about 10 years then they went into the attic when he & mom moved to a different house. They are sizes 22x14, 16x16, 13x9 and 14x5 snare.

When he first got em the bass drum was missing the spurs, hoop & t-rods & claws for one side. Floor tom was missing both hoops, tension rods, tone controls and the legs. Rack tom was missing bottom hoop and tone controls. The snare seems have all of it's original hoops, hardware & strainer set-up. Throw-off lever was gone, dad made the one pictured with a long screw & a piece of plastic tubing. The wraps on all the drums are in decent shape. They've got that "grainy" texture from shrinkage over the years. The insides of the shells of the bass & floor tom are scratched-up from someone "nesting" the drums inside each other. All the reso side bearing edges have some nicks & dings in em. Apparently the previous owner(s) used this set quit a bit with-out reso heads.

I gonna clean em up for dad. Smooth-out the wraps, replace the missing/incorrect hardware.

Can some of you Gretsch gurus tell me what we've got here? On the snare label it looks like model #4157? (faded) Serial #56675. Round badge w/grommet. The knob to the right of the throw-off was literally stuck on with chewing gum to plug an extra hole. Maybe use to have a key holder?

The rack tom label has model #4415? (faded) Serial #57590

Floor tom is model #4418, serial #44993

Both toms have the round badge with tack. Toms have no vent holes. They look like they had tone controls on both heads.

Bass drum is missing label & badge. There is a vent hole on top of bass shell.

Here are some pics:

That is a nice find.

Drums are probably mid-late 60's - I'd have to check the record books to make sure though.

Wow, what a find! And worth in the neighborhood of $2000 as they sit. Good on you for fixing them up for your old man. Great gift.

Count the number of plies on the bass drum. If three ply, it'll be a late 50's drum and the absence of a tag will make sense. Sometimes tags dry up and fall off. But if it's a three ply, it's from a time when tags weren't used.

John

Too many great drums to list here!

The bass reso side has the Gretsch claws & T-rods. Batter side are Luddys that dad installed.

BTW, upon close inspection of the wrap, these drums are red glass glitter, not the red sparkle, if that makes any differance. Where they not both options for this era?

Yes - the reso has the 60's era t-rods and claws.

The 50's t-rods are the faucet-style (like tap faucets = nice).

Very nice indeed! I was called out once to have a look atsome drums that were found in a house that was going to be demolished. Not nearly as nice as your dad's find, but they were a late 70's Ludwig 4 piece. Still have them. Clean them up and Enjoy!
