Odd Oyster Black pattern on this drum! Last viewed: 2 hours ago

Loading...

So, I'm perusing eBay and came across this 60's Jazz Festival in Oyster Black.

http://www.ebay.com/itm/1964-Ludwig-Black-Oyster-Jazz-Fest-Snare-Drum-Ringo-/190758504729?pt=LH_DefaultDomain_0&hash=item2c6a17c919

I thought I'd seen pretty much every pattern during this time period, but this one has me stumped. Is it original?

I also let the seller know that the drum is from 1966, not 1964.

That is a strange pattern. It also looks a little blueish to me. Looks a little like something I've seen on Precision's site, or one of the many.

The top edge of the wrap along the bearing edge looks a little too crisp to me - Chris

I also requested to the seller that he post pictures of the entire drum AND to remove the top head, showing if the wrap goes into the shell seam. That would pretty much validate the wrap. We'll see if he responds.

I noticed in the ad that he dodged the mention of "original wrap". The wrap looks a little too "modern" to me, looking more like the style of Rogers Onyx wraps than the smoother strata of BOP from the era. You never know, though, and I'm no expert. Definitely a "wrap into the shell" pic would close the case.

If it DOES turn out to be a rewrap, what does the vintage drumming community do? Does somebody warn potential buyers that they're not really buying a $1600+ drum, or does everybody take a step back and rely on the "let the buyer beware" mantra?

pretty sure it's a rewrap. I'm also pretty sure that is the same drum a guy from Pa. (where this one is from) tried to sell me as an original but he then admitted it was a rewrap and it sat on CL for $300 and then just went away.

He initially wanted $2,000.00 for the drum. Looked exactly the same with the "different" BOP pattern. Sure looks funny to me.

I also asked him for a picture of the wrap going into the ply which is when he said,"you know, I think this is a rewrap".
