I think that I might have felt guilty enough to give the man $200, and insist that he take it.

I'd have given him a couple hundred more. $400 maybe. I'd liek to think someone would do the same thing for me if I sold something I thought was valued less than it actually was. Just a good mojo kinda thing...

Well, here's a little story for you... I found out about a Club Date kit with KB Supra snare, cymbals and hardware for sale locally and went to have a look. I liked what I saw - the woman said they were her grandfather's. She said her husband was going to throw them in the trash and she figured she'd sell everything for 50 bucks rather than dumping it! Well, I turned around and said, 'tell you what, here's $500 instead of $50'. Expecting them to act like they just won the lottery, I was quite shocked when the husband retorted that he would no longer sell them to me. He said that if I was crazy enough to pay $500, then there must be someone crazier willing to pay more. They sold the drums for $950 to some other guy the following week. Although I believe in good mojo, it bit me in the keester that time. That said, I routinely give more than asking price on deals where people are asking way too little and obviously don't know what they have. That was the first and only time it's ever backfired. DOH

I would file that experience away, and recall it for any future opportunities to underpay for something offered for sale. In hind sight, once the drums are secured in your vehicle---or better yet at your house---contact the sellers again with your "guilt offering". That husband was a first class weasel to pdo such a despicable thing to you. I hope that the additional money he got from someone else was wasted on some stupid thing that breaks in a short while with no warranty.

No matter how far you push the envelope, it is still stationery.

Wow, that is amazing. I'm still hoping to find someone wanting to pass on their old drum set.

That's the perfect scenario. I agree.

a month or so ago, there was an import kit with hardware, snare and cymbals on craigslist locally. 350 was the asking price. i enlarged the pic and saw hoop clips on the snare. asked seller for pics of the snare. it ended up being an early 20's ludwig heavy shell nob 5x14 8 lugger. i could have gotten the whole package as advertised. but i'm not really into selling gear and really wanted just the snare. we agreed on 225 for the snare. i was honest with him and told him what it was and what my opinion of the possible value was if he listed it on ebay or whatever. everybody came out good on this one i think...

I really appreciate all the feedback as well as the various points of view expressed regarding my original post. First, let me clearly state that my friend who purchased the kit is NOT a vintage drum collector nor is he knowledgable in regard to respective values of vintage kits. He plays modern equipment and only owns a couple of "player" kits -- one that he uses for his practice sessions and one that he plays out. Whenever he's got questions regarding any vintage drums he normally drops me a line and I try to help him out whenever possible. When I received his phone call after he purchased this particular kit he seemed more excited about the wrap than the make, model or value of the kit. He had a significant amount of questions, which I attempted to address. I just don't want anybody here thinking that he's the type of individual to intentionally take advantage of others because that couldn't be further from the truth. This is a gentleman who helps others out whenever and wherever possible, I can assure you. Just wanted to clarify that point for all that have been following this thread. THANKS!
