I have an early 70s tom mount (on the bass drum) and the internal threads for the bolt that tightens the tom holder are stripped/damaged and will not work..at all. Is there anyway to fix this without replacing the mount? I thought maybe you clever guys might know a way...

I just went through this.
I ended just re-chasing the original hole with a 8mm 1.25 tapper.
This is the same thread size as the t-handle tightener that I just purchased from someone on this forum. I was lucky as I didn't need to drill out the stripped hole with a drill to make room for a thread insert. Depending on the condition of your stripped hole, you may have to enlarge it and put an insert in that matches your bolt or t-handle. Your local AutoZone, Advanced Auto will have everything that you need to get the job done. I would recommend that you remove the flange and clamp it carefully while you tap and use a little 3n1 oil while tapping.

Heli-coil thread insert repair would be the best way to salvage that mount. Of course, once you fix that side of things, you'll need a new bolt/wingscrew as well, unless you somehow were able to salvage it without damage. In the future, after its repaired, keep an eye on how tight you tighten things up....don't want a repeat, right? :D

Throw a memory lock on the post after the fix for some added strength, wo'nt have to tighten the T-rod as much.

Well I took the mount to my local auto supply store. The guy was so nice, he opened a tapper and re threaded the mount fit me right there! Didn't even charge me. Score!
