20s-30s Conn Snare Questions

Loading...

Hopefully, pictured below are several pictures of a drum in my possession(webmaster will apparently have to do it...)that was owned by my grandfather either in the 20s or mid 30s. We are not sure because he either used it in Drum and Bugle Corps in the 20s or when he was in the army in the mid 30s. I'm going with the latter because it does include a detachable green strap.

I am trying to help my mom with finding out about this drum...how old it might be, etc. Would also like a range estimate of what it might be worth.

A couple of important notes....

The only two markings I could find as to the manufacturer was a small engraving that I have included, that didn't seem to match anything on the Vintage Drum site. The other one was on the drum head itself.

Any help you can provide would be appreciated. Thanks in advance.

PS-I'm a Hammond Organist. Please don't make fun of my lack of drumness....

There is no pic attached but most of the Conn equipment was made by Leedy. There is alot of info on Leedy (coopersvintagedrums.com) and I'm surew you'll see the hardware matches the Leedy gear.

Without pictures I would not assume that the drum was made by Leedy, as I have seen Conn drums that do not look at all like a Leedy drum to me. C.G.Conn LTD did buy Leedy in 1929 (http://www.leedydrums.com/since1895_2.html) or 1927 (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/C.G._Conn) and Ludwig and Ludwig around the same time. BTW A lot of the wikipedia info appears to be from history page of the Conn site (http://www.cgconn.com/content/history.php). If you go to this web site (http://www.oberloh.com/gallery/Connfactoryimages.htm) you can also see pictures from ~1911 that show images of the C.G. Conn factory and they clearly made at least some of their own drums. Depending on when it was actually made your drum might be a "Leedy", a "Ludwig" or neither. You really need to post pics to get a definitive answer to your questions.

In order to add pictures you need to click on the manage attachments button under additional options which is right below the message box when posting. You may have to resize your pictures as there is a size limitation. If you don't have the software to do so you might try an online resizing tool like the following link, http://www.shrinkpictures.com/.

Hope this helps,

tom

There was a blurb on the website that said if you didn't have a way to host the pics then send them to the webmaster and he would do it, but so far no dice. I'm going to try something else to get them on here. Thanks so much for what you have provided so far but I understand your need for pics so let me try again....

This snare was made by Leedy(c,1921-29). Try taking some upright, in focus pictures of the strainer mechanism, & give some dimensions. (diameter of head, & depth of shell. Do not include the hoops in any of your measurements.)

Would like to get the pics you require. When you say upright, do you mean skin on top and snares on bottom?

Regarding measurements of head, are you speaking the playing area, widest area?

And in depth, you say do not include hoops. I am assuming the hoop is the metal frame that goes around the skin? Not a drummer here, I am a Hammond organist, so if there is not a set of drawbars or Leslie involved, I am in the dark.

Thanks for your patience and assistance!
