What's my Slingerland bop kit worth?

Loading...

Hi all- I need to get rid of my Slingerland bop kit and I'm wondering how much I should sell it for. I have never bought or sold a kit before (parents bought this when I was 12) so I don't know what details might make it worthless or worth a lot. Also keep in mind I'll probably need to sell locally because I have no idea how to ship it. (Fortunately I'm in an urban area.)

The interior of the mounted tom is stamped 1966; the base drum and floor tom are stamped 1965. I plan to include a Ludwig speed king kick pedal (in useable but rough condition), a tom-mount wrench combo tool, and two cardboard cases (for toms only).

I was going to sell my cymbals (and throne) separately because I've never thought they sound good with this kit (20" Ziljian Ping Ride, 14" Zildian New Beat hi-hat). Is it better to sell them with the kit?

What are the drum sizes!

Is the finish original?

Are the BD hoops original?

Extra holes? (BD mount looks to have been moved)

I'm sure others will chime in...The Band

Never play it the same way once.

Drum sizes: 18", 14", 12"

Finish: I think it's original, but this set had 19 years of history before I got it so I can't be 100% sure.

BD hoops: I'm guessing they're original. Any way to tell?

Extra holes: Yes, one extra hole. Based on pictures I've seen of similar kits, the original tom mount required four holes. When someone installed the current two hole mount, they drilled a new hole between the existing ones. The new hole would not be visible if someone reinstalled an original mount.

Here's what a store is asking for one with matching snare:

Maybe scratch what I said about the holes. All I really know is that there are five holes for a two bolt mount. It does look like someone had a rectangular 4-bolt mount on there at some point, slightly wider than what is there now.

$3000 is a lot. I did try selling mine for half that on craigslist but people completely lost interest once they saw the photos. (Is this because of the extra holes?) Anyway I'm not trying to get rich- my goal is to get what it's worth. I don't want to rip off myself and I don't want to rip off the buyer.

Riick,

From what I've read and seen, your kit would not of had a rail mount. The sizes of the kit you have, if they are original to each other and sold at the same time, would of been a Slingerland Jet.

When the kit came out, there was no rail mount as factory, it might of been optional. The only tom mount that I've seen on a kit in a catalog was the Set-O-Matic type. The first Slingerland catalog to show the Jet kit was 1964, and the rail mount was optional, as seen here The Set-O-Matic tom mount didn't show up on the Jet kit until the 1969 Catalog.

The original Jet also had COB hoops, I don't think yours are original, but they look nice with the kit. I'd also bet that finish may not be original, the tom looks grainy on the first pic, and it doesn't look right to me. I'm no expert, but I have a Jet that's wrapped in black. If you search the forum here, you'll find it.

Value......I don't think 3 grand. Extra holes and some non-original. I'd put it at $650-$750.00 to the right buyer. I'm being generous with that estimate as 18" bass drum kits are much desired and I just declined an offer of 1,000 for my Rogers KOA 18, 12, 14 bop kit. And it's all original.

Its better to have people think you're an idiot, than to open your mouth and prove them wrong, unless you doubt yourself then speak away....

Wow- this is really interesting; thank you!

The mounted tom does have sort of a texture, whereas the base and especially floor tom are more smooth. I should note though, in places where the finish is scratched the "bare" wood underneath is the same color as the finish. This is true for the base drum and for the mounted tom (I'm not sure about for the floor tom because it's not scratched). So I always assumed this was their mahogany veneer.

I'd put it at $650-$750.00 to the right buyer.

I may have to plan to sell for less than that- like I said I don't know how to ship it, and I'm not much of a salesman either!

I look forward to hearing additional observations and ideas if anyone has them...

Riick,

I would suggest if you are an eBay member, to sell the kit as a whole, keeping the hardware and cymbals separately.

Just out of curiosity, where are you located?

Confused- if I ebay it I have to be willing to ship it don't I? I have no idea how to ship a drumset, and my friend at a shipping store says it would probably cost more than the set itself if I had them do it.

Also just to verify - you're saying sell base drum, floor tom, mounted tom, mounted tom's key, cases for toms, and maybe kick pedal (but NOT cymbals & throne) as a package deal, right?

Boston. Know of any seller's resources here? All I can think of is craigslist, and possibly freecycle.
