Camco Snare Drum - Help Identifying

As you can see it's a bit dirty. Some people moved out of there house down the road from me about 6 months ago and left it in a huge pile of trash. I asked the new owner what was to be done with everything in the pile, and they informed me it would be all be burned by the end of the week. So I asked if I could take something from the pile and they were like yeah whatever it's just trash to me and obviously the other people. So I dug it out of the trash and here it is. I don't know too much about it, except it's a beautiful red sparkle snare drum. The bottom head is torn and the strainer is really bent, but other than that, it's in amazing condition. Especially for having been left in the trash. We asked the previous owners about it and the guy just said it was a waste of money that he didn't want and that I could just have it. So I was wondering if you guys could help me figure some stuff out.

What year is this? What's the value? I think, but obviously don't know for sure, that everything is original on it. Thanks everyone! Hope you enjoy seeing this beauty as much as I did.

I recently sold the identical drum for $500+ to a forum member. That's an early 1960's Oaklawn Camco 'Studio' snare drum. It has a Jasper maple shell and re-rings along with the unique Camco bearing edges.

What you have there is a rare and wonderful sounding instrument that is worth anywhere from, $450. to $650. in the current market. Sell it as-is for the low price, or keep it, clean it up, fix the strainer and play it. It'll be one of the best sounding snare drums you ever played. I sold the one like yours, but I own an Oaklawn Camco myself. I wouldn't sell or trade it for the world. One of those things that will have to be pried from my cold, dead hands...

We're in the process of cleaning out my mother-in-law's house in order to

sell it. Just down the same street was a house that was also being de-junked.

There were two large roll-off dumpsters side by side in the driveway. I

thought why not investigate and see what I find. (drums of course) Sorry

to say, that I didn't find any drums, but you never know until you look.

It's all about being in the right place at the right time!!! Show us pics of

the Red Camco snare after it's done.

The bottom hoop is a Camco COB hoop and the top is a generic non-original hoop. That would date your drum from between 1961-mid 60's. Not sure what you mean about the strainer as it looks to be ok from what I can see in the pics. The shell is either 3,4 or 6 ply Jasper. I have a 3 ply Jasper Tuxedo Studio Model like yours in burgundy sparkle. They sound really, really good. It's one of my favorite snare drums.

If you look at John's it has the tone control, very rare and hard to find version!

I have a Tuxedo lug Oaklawn as well, but it's in near mint condition. Still, I've always heard that the Turret lugs were better drums and more desirable.

Anybody know the real scoop?

Aristocrats are worth more as Tuxedo drums were a budget line although being the same shell and 8 lugs it's hard to really see the drum as anything less than pro IMO.

I've had numerous of each and I actually prefer the Tuxedo snares. I don't know what it is but they just sound better. I've got some Aristocrats in my collection that sound amazing but I've also been through many before finding the ones in my current collection.
