Vintage Ludwig..Remo vs Evans...!!! Last viewed: 31 seconds ago

Hi all!!

I have some Ludwigs with some Evans G1 heads on it (22,13,16....3ply ludwig).

I thought ... Evans G1...or Remo Ambassador...both 1ply...shouldn't make much difference...

Well, just to test I put some old ambassadors on it....suddenly the 13" tom starts singing.....WHAT A BIG difference!!!!!

Just amazing...the ambassadors have much more punch and sound much more open while the G1's make a dry more dirty muffled sound...

Any experience, pro/contra's between the head choises.....stay with the ultra dry evans or go for ambassador? :)

Also...I heard the vintage ambassador sounds great on those....but are these not going to sound too try on the Ludwigs???

Thanks a lot!band3

P.S.: te heads don't seem to fit exactly on the toms...especially on the 16 wich is a bit too big ...

Yes, Remo Heads are much warmer sounding, especially on vintage Ludwig's.

My recent experiment was to put on resonant side coated ambassador instead clear one. This is the sound I was looking for!

I bought for batter, Vintage A...they are the warmest sounding heads I ever heard...So Vintage A/Ambassador Coated duo gives warm killer, open sound!

My 3-ply Ludwig sounds really nice with them. I have same Super Classic config as You.

I am using coated emperor batter over coated ambassador on my toms, sounds great!

My only issue lately has been a seemingly bad batch of heads, where the coating has worn off very fast. Hopefully they sort this out soon.

I did put a vintage emp on my floor tom, didn't notice a large difference to the regular emp.

I have heard a bunch of drummers on the forums saying emperors over ambassadors. I have been using coated ambassadors top and bottom. What is the advantage to using an emperor on top besides longer head life?

A darker more focused sound, I use either white Emperors or Vintage emperors on almost all my snares, and toms. on the top and and white coated Ambassador on the bottom.

Your drummers not much good is he!? What you need is someone that's as good as me. ! John Henry Bonham !!

I love Evans J1 Etched heads on my Ludwig 60's BDP. Any one else prefer these? I don't usually switch heads/brands unless I'm unhappy with the sound. I very much like to hear the natural tonality, musicality w/ only SLIGHT muffling via the toms' mufflers.

I find it is a more focussed sound with less overtones.

I used to use amb. over amb.

I like the J1s as well. I prefer the coated ambs over clear ambs for my 12/14 tom set up, and the J1 over clear ambs for my 13/16 tom set up. I used to use coated emps over clear ambs on my 13/16 tom set up, but they sounded too thuddy, even when they "sang". The J1s are perfect!

I recently traded with a forum member for a '67 Ludwig kit. He had clear Emperors on top and Evans Resonants on the bottoms of the toms, so I'm using them until they need replacing. They sound AMAZING!!! Big, warm and punchy tone. I've been an Aquarian guy for the last 10 years, so I will be trying various spares I have on this kit to see what works best for me. As brand-loyal as I tend to be, I have to say that I will quickly go back to Emperors if I don't get that tone or better from Aquarians.

As for the snare - coated Ambassador and Ambassador Snare combo produces a nice warm pop at high head tension and fairly high wire tension.

I put a clear Aquarian Force I (equivalent of a Powerstroke 3) batter and a white Regulator with offset port hole on the bass drum. They are doing the job, but I think I'll try either a smooth white Force I on the resonant side to get more boom out of it.

I'm no guru, just a vintage drum junkie!

I have always preferred Remo drumheads more than others.
