Vintage Slingerland Tenor Tymp Last viewed: 2 minutes ago

Loading...

I have this interesting drum that I'm trying to learn more about. I've been able to find out that it's a Slingerland Tenor Tymp, and based on the badge, lug style and catalog entries I've seen it looks to be circa 1940.

Anybody have any idea how I might further narrow the date, and/or how rare these are?

I've attached pics of the badge and drum, along with a 1940 catalog image showing the drum.

Thanks!

Don

Well, for the most part I stick with drums my age or younger, so I'm not going to be much help (that means I pretty much stay away from drums built earlier than the late 50s :) ).

But, Welcome to the forum!

There will be someone step up and help you out!

The tymp tom is in the Slingerland catalog by 1936. And the 1941 catalog shows the tom w/ new lugs. So your drum probably dates from between 1936 & 40. W/ out a date stamping inside the shell this may be as close to a date as possible. I've used drums similar to these odd sizes for floor toms, by mounting them on a cut down old WFL or Ludwig snare stand.

They came w/ a marching /thigh bracket, so, were obviously aimed at marching units. I'm sure percussionists & drummers also found many other uses for them.

Hi Don,Welcome to this great forum..Now onto your drum Slingerland made these Tenor drums from the mid 30's to the 70's.Your drum would be from the 30's to the mid 40's.They made them a few ways one was both ends had heads. The rims could be metal ones or wood ones. They also made one like you have with a metal bottom to it.They also made them is size's from 16",18",20",22" heads if i recall right all were 14" deep. These types of drum were used few ways as marching band drums. Also as a pit drummer would have a set of four of these. These were on round metal stands with legs that hold each drum. The marching drums would have a leg rest on the side.On the 20".and 22" headed double head drums drummers would used them as a cocktail bass drum set up.Their is not many of these drums around from these years.I have not seen one for 20 years or so.Slingerland also made the marching type of these drums up to the 70's..Double and open single headed .These still show up on Ebay from time to time....Mikey

Thanks for the welcome, everyone! And thank you especially for the information you've all provided.

Bowing

I did check the inside of the drum and didn't find any stamps or markings on the wood. Attached a close-up of on of the lugs, too.

Thanks again, all!

Don
