Howdy, First time poster - I'm the proud owner of a 1967 Ludwig black oyster pearl kit that I'm thanking my stars I spent the time to take care of over the years. It's set on a 20", and I believe it's considered the 3pc. jazz size with 8x12 tom and 14x14 floor tom. I bought it from my drum teacher years ago, and he supplied it with a non-matching early 70's 9x13" black oyster pearl tom for more rock usage. Would like to sell that tom. My question is on the snare. It is also a Ludwig, I guess it's a supra-phonic. It's dated 9/8/70, with the blue olive badge, no serial number, and it's also stamped _nti-galvanized inside the shell. Does anyone know it that makes it a Ludalloy or COB? It is a 6.5x14", ten lug with the round knob. Would be interested in a 5" snare Ludwig chrome or ... to match the vintage of the set, 1967. Thanks.

Your snare is not COB, it is an alloy shell.
If it's got a stamp, or sticker, saying Anti-Galvanic, it's Ludalloy (aluminum).

Thanks, I understand the question has gotten old, but now your answer after all of the research i've done has me more confused! The snare with both heads on is 10lbs., and if you're referring to this as a Ludalloy, I read that they were lighter. Is this some kind of a hybrid? I should have mentioned it says Reliable above the _nti-galvanized inside the shell.

There are a few variables that keep this question percolating. This page sums up most of what you have to think about:

From a previous post of mine: [The] page says that "Ludalloy versions can weigh 5-6 lbs". Mine, (all original 1963, keystone badge, no serial number) at 7 lbs 3.5 oz, certainly refutes that statement, or at least the range should be broadened.
Just for laughs I weighed my circa 1921 Ludwig All-Metal Separate Tension snare (brass shell, brass hoops and 6 brass lugs). It always seems much heavier to lift. I was surprized that it came in at 7 lbs 12 oz! Only a little more than a half pound heavier than the Supra!

We have discussed in the past, the possibility of a steel shelled supra phonic. This is actually where a magnet test is valid. If there is a STRONG attraction, then it could be a steel shell.Try sticking it to the rims first. They should be COS.
For the record,I have never seen a 10 pound Ludalloy shell.Reliable anti galvanic stamped shells are or should be, Ludalloy.
Hey I'm interested in the snare.. I saw in another thread you mentioned Madison NJ, are you near there? If so, I'm very close..
I have a 1967 5" Supra that I may want to sell or trade(but of course Funky Crime has first dibs)

I won't stand in your way if you want to make a sale. I'm keeping my 1970, and I solved the mystery with the help of the Vintage Drum site. My drum in Hackettstown, nj is a super-sensitive, 10 lug, 6 1/2 x 14 all steel, triple chromed!
