Just wondering (too lazy to do the research) if they made 18x20 floor toms at that time, and this is just a "conversion."

Just a thought.

That was mine, he even used my photos. I actually had 2 of them...they were custom ordered back in the 60's, and never picked up from the music store. NOS. 18x20 was a standard floor tom size then...whoever ordered these just had them include BD hoops and no mounting hardware.

I sold them on ebay a year or two ago, no reserve, they went for around $350 each.

Relax guys, it's a legit drum. I had a 59' burgundy sparkle transition badge kit that had that bass drum with four spurs. The color wasn't supposed to exist in 59' either, but I researched the kit with Wm F. Ludwig himself and he assured me that such kits were made. I didn't think the drum was legit either at first, that's why I wrote to Bill Ludwig. The burgundy wrap went into the scarf joint so it was not a re-wrap.

From Fuse

18 x 20 was a standard floor tom size then??? Are you kidding me? The bass drum from my '64 Slingerland kit isn't that big. Why would they make a floor tom that big?

I kid you not! It was a more common size during the big band era, and probably just never went away. Gene Krupa used one often during his career. They made somewhat of a comeback in the 70's.

Here you can see the size offered in the '67 Ludwig catalog:

Thanks for knowing AND doing the research! I knew that at least in the early-to-mid 70s they offered that size as a floor tom, just couldn't remember about the 60s. Had no clue on the "Big Band" era, as that era actually pre-dates me a bit.

And, I do know that at least in the early-to-mid-70s Ludwig would allow special orders on just about anything within reason. This would have easily been within reason as nothing special would have to me made.

Nice looking drums!
