LM400 vs COB 5x14 Ludwigs (vintage snares)

Loading...

When I purchased my 60s Ludwig kit recently, it came with a 5x14 Super Ludwig COB snare drum. What do you guys think about the difference between this drum and the LM400 aluminum drum? Any real sound differences?

I also own a 60s Acrolite, which is nice...but considering a vintage LM400 as well (aluminum version)...if it is different enough than the COB drum. I like using different snares for backbeat oriented music. I was reading somewhere that Al Jackson used both an Acro and an LM400. I'm wondering if the LM400 that he may have used would have been the COB version, or if it was truly the aluminum version. I realize it's splitting hairs, but I really enjoyed the snare sounds that he got on records...

one of the best drum ludwig made

April 2nd 1969 scarfed pink champagne holly wood and 65/66 downbeat snare, and , supra same year very minty kit old pies
66/67 downbeat with canister
Super 400 small round knob
1967 super classic obp

once the brass ceases to glitter, and the drum looses its luster, and the stage remains dark, all you have left is the timbre of family.

I'm lucky that I have that vintage COB snare...I know those things go for top dollar. Man is it heavy!

Just wondering if I should get the LM400 "aluminum" as well...I'd probably go for a vintage version...or perhaps the COB Super sounds very similar???

With the COB & the Acrolite you've pretty much got it covered, get them to suit whatever you want to do, maybe a LM402 to shake it up a bit?

That's true! I do have a new 402 as well. On my last gig on new years, I used the Acro and the Elvin snare. Both worked great. Next time, I'll pull out the old COB super 5x14 and maybe the old Radio King!
