Transition Badge snare Last viewed: 3 hours ago

Need some information on a Ludwig Transition Badge Ludwig snares. I have Rob Cook's "The Ludwig Book" and it states Ludwig stopped making the SS models after the war and did not start again until 1961. Has anyone seen or know of a SuperSensitive version of these snares? Any pictures of some of these snares? I have a shell that looks different on the inside compared to any of my mid 60's and newer Ludalloy Supras or SS snares. It has the inside edges rolled inwards back towards the shell, you can see the shell is brass where there are holes thru the shell. So it appears to be a legit Transition shell and the badge/grommet looks like it has never been touched. The top half of badge itself does not fit tight to the shell. It appears to be set-up for a SuperSensitive? I'm trying to edit down some pictures to post. Thanks.

I can't tell by the photos they are to small to see.So at the strainer how many holes are in the shell a S/S would have one big hole for the rod to go into the drum to the other side so both sides of the drum would have these holes...The last one of these snares i sold with the Tran/s badge i sold for 1,000.00.Mikey

Mikey777, the drum looks like it was set-up as a SuperSensitive as all the holes for one are there, however there are some other holes as well. I can send you the full size pictures off this site if you like. I had to re-size the pix to fit on here.

Yes Barry, I have seen and own one of these trans badge S/S..If you could email me some photos of the shell that would be great. As you know on the S/S shells these shells had three holes two small ones for the strainer and above them one big hole for the rod..These holes are on both sides of the shell. The drum i have does have the rounded over edges but they do not go to the inside of the shell.By what i can see in your photo the snare bed looks the same as my drum. Your shell is brass should be about 10-11 pounds heavy..In the Ludwig book they say these snares are a rare bird to come by.I have only seen just a few of these drums in 35+ years. The one i sold for 1,000.00 about two years ago needed some work..The one before that sold at the first Hollywood drum show i think the year was 1994 {i can't recall }but it sold for 1,500.00....Mikey

OK, Mikey. How do I send you some photos? BTW mine does roll over towards the shell, my mistake in describing it. It sure does look like a S/S snare to me. My email address is : laydownthebeat66@hotmail.com please send me an email and I will send you back some pictures of the snare.

The trans badge seems to contradict Rob Cooks statement of the drums not being made till 61.The trans badge pre dates 61,which would be pre serial keystone badges .That drum may be uber rare.NiceCool1
