Louie Bellson Last viewed: 12 minutes ago

I have been thinking about bringing this up for a while. Every day I pass a home about two miles from my house. When I was a kid my parents always told me that this is where Louie Bellson and wife Pear Baily lived.

Last night at my local bar ther was a man palying an electronic drum set along with recorded jazz music. I am freinds with the bar owner and told her how I liked his gig and that I play drums also. During the mans break he came to me and asked if I was the drummer that Lori (bar owner) was referring too. Yes! I said, and the conversation started. I had asked him if he was aware that Louie Bellson used to live right down the street from the bar. He did know about that and told me that he dated his sister. I told him that I had always wanted to stop at the house and ask if they had any old drums in the attick or basement that they would like to get rid of. In my surprize he said that he owns one of Bellsons kits. It is a double bass Remo kit. I asked if he would ever part with it. He said his kids would kill him if he sold it! Well I am not giving up, It will be easy to contact him because the bar owner hired him and I am freinds with her. I just want to see the drums and if I do I will take a picture. If I am lucky, he will sell them to me and be killed! just kidding.

Thank you,

Jeff C

Louie Bellson's widow was at the Hollywood Drum Show and was selling some sticks, mugs, etc. She runs a website dedicated to Louie and you might have some luck contacting her through the site about any drums.

Someone was selling one of Louie's kits on CL in the L.A. area within the last few months too. It was PTS Remo kit.

Here is the thread

Jeff, Alittle story about Mr.Bellson that i think you and other members will like its long. This was the first time that i got to meet Mr.Bellson and became friends with him.Back in 1987 his band was playing at Disneyland in ca.I use to go see him and Mr.Rich all the time anyway. He was playing their for 2 weeks.I would go in and see him play then on about the 8th night i went up to him.Mr Bellson was at his table with his daughter-{De-De}- she was singing that night.Mr.Bellson said to me son you must be a drummer too i see you here every night for the pass week watching me so he said "What do you think of my playing".I said you are a great player sir,so you like the type of music iam playing i said yes sir i do-[back then i had long black hair and played heavy metal}- we talk on his brakes the rest of the night about drumming i had so many questions. So the next night i went in to see he again but i also had one for his heads when he was playing Rogers drums in the 60's and ask him if he would sign the head to me,it was in a big bag a 22" Remo head that Remo made it was a Blue Sparkle head and had a sticker on the front that said "The Dynasonic Sound of Louie bellson" sticker had his drum set up on it.He ask me were did i get that head that he has not seen one in years.I told he a friend got alot of these heads in Blue,Red, Gold sparkle they were on Rogers 22" bass drums in W.M.P. that were 5" deep.Mr.Bellson told me that these heads and shells were used in front of each band member that they were music stands that he use in the mid 60's..{I know this story is getting long so i will make it short}--Anyway he did sign my head i when in the next night i give him one of these heads/stands..That was the night that i got to play on his drums after the show and park was closed..are friendship lasted to the day that Me.Bellson went to Drum Heaven...Mikey

Mikey, that is a very cool story. You are lucky to have played his drums and be friends with him. I sure wish that I would have played the drums consistently since I started in 6th grade (about 1972). Unfortunatly I took a very long break for about 24 years coincedentaly, thats how long I have been married. I started playing again in Feb. 2011 so really learning all over again. Stumbling onto this site was a plus, I really enjoy looking for and restoring old drums along with playing them.

Again, great story. I will pass that on to my bar friends!

Thank you,

Jeff C

PS, do you still have the drum head? That would be a cool thing to have.

Thank you!

Nice story Mikey. I love reading this stuff so if you're story has more to it, please continue. I have never heard or read a bad word against Louie Bellson ever. He seems to have been a real down to earth fella. Would have be a pleasure to meet him. . . .James

Yeah, cool story!

Since it's xmas time, anyone got any "drunken santa drummer" stories or similar holiday themed ones? ( Oh wait, I was the drunken santa drummer...how does that story go? ...just kidding.)
