Hello!! Before I start just want to say that I'm new at this site which I truly like and enjoy. And yes I am a rookie vintage collector please excuse my ignorance.Ok I bought a 60's Ludwig wich I believe to be a downbeat set, 8x12,16x16,14x20 and it came with a 5x14 10 lug snare wich i beive it to be from 1964 serial#106124 with a bat red muffler with a super super clean no pit or "(acne)" at all in the shell and hardware as well. My question is...... Is it a COB?? Or a LUDALLOY?? Yes I did the magnet test and there is no resistance but there is on the hoops, I did the cut on one of the lug hole and did not see any brass, I did the wight test wich is 7-1/2 LBS, did not see th "b" marking anywhere any feed back would be great and thank you for your time.Ivan.
You scored a Supra Ivan, not a chrome over brass Super. Without pics, and with the description, the clues are:
1. Weight. The COB Supers go around 9 pounds.
2. Serial number. The COB snares don't have numbers, but... not all un numbered badge Supers are COB... ya gotta be careful!
The easiest way to tell, at a moments glance, is to look for the rolled flange at the edge of the shell. The brass ones have the flange, the aluminum ones don't.
Here's a pic of the flange, go to post #13 in this thread and click the picture to enlarge it:

You still have a great snare, nothing wrong with a Supra... could be the greatest snare ever made.
