How close do Ludwig serial numbers need to be to declare a kit an "original kit?" I'm looking at an apparently matching 3 piece set but the bass drum sn dates it to 64 and the 13 and 16 toms serial numbers date to 65, the seller inists all drums were purchased as a set at the same time. There are no dates stamped on the insides?
Ludwig serial numbers?
some of the charts and info that i see on what are 65 and 65 numbers arent exactly correct. most people think that all 5 digit serial numbers were 64. that is incorrect. ludwig was still using 5 digit numbers through march of 65 and into 6 digits in the exact same month.
ive got a database of hundreds of 64 and 65 serial numbers. i might e able to help you pin them down a little better.
ive got one original kit that the numbers are real close and one drum is out of the sequence a bit. seller bought them all together new.

What color is it? If it is one of the most popular colors they could have been pulled off the shelves at the same time at Ludwig even though they had been made and assembled at different times. They made more of the popular colors in advance while some of the less popular colors were made upon order. The Black Oyster of course was the most popular color in the mid sixties due to Ringo's influence, with silver sparkle a close second, IIRC.
Thought Blue Sparkle and Red Sparkle were the most popular colors, no?
I have always seen more black oyster pearl and Silver Sparkle on Ludwigs from the mid sixties come through my store and through the other shops I worked in. I guess if you include all the marching drums, then blue and red might be the most popular. Where is BIII when you need him?
