help with value of rogers holiday kit Last viewed: 3 hours ago

Loading...

Considering making an offer on this mid '60's Rogers Holiday kit and would love input on its value. Advertised as 'orig. red sparkle wrap, inlays are tight and brilliant with no fade, cracks, separation or lifting. 3 ply Jasper shells. Chrome is excellent 9/10, hardware functions smoothly & is tight'

13 inch – Cleveland – 43411

16 inch – Dayton – 102420

20 inch – Dayton – 75933

The cymbal arm is missing. I believe these are Keller, not Jasper shells, correct?

All the Rogers gurus, please chime inWalking

Thanks much!

Mike

Interesting that it came with a 13,don't know how that affects value,I thought Rogers were mainly keller by the beavertail era,I would think 5 ply by this time,I have a 1967 cleveland dayton flat grey kit, they are 5 ply,but that kit looks like from the pic that it has a 3 ply re ring.Rogers I think had a lot less anomalies as far as manufacturing consistency from year to year.On these forums the 3 ply shells I have seen had a much rounder bearing edge, and most kits I have seen with those were late 50's early 60's.As far as a value I guess 1200ish? I am not up on current prices,I am sure the more knowing members will be able to help you.

thanks eamesuser. I was wondering about the 13" tom as the normal setup is 12, 16, 20. I'm assuming the other mount on the kick is for a cymbal stand but it looks like a tom mount to me? The seller did state that all drums have re-rings. Here's a link to CL ad:

So, is the 3-ply more desirable (sound and value) vs 5-ply? Was it common to get a set that were Cleveland AND Dayton - with a wide range of serial #s?

Thanks again!

Nice kit. Just a few thoughts. The usual set up was a 20,12,16, but I have seen 20,13,16 (most likely ordered that way). The serial number on that kit would tell me it has 5 ply Keller shells.

The b&b era kits had three ply shells and many of the earlier b&b kits had flatter edges. When Rogers switched to beavertail lugs the kits had three ply shells, but the bearing edges were like the later 5 ply shells.

I probably shouldn't let the secret out, but I personally think the earlier 3 ply beavertail kits have some serious mojo! The same scenario holds true for the snare drums (earlier beavertail models are three ply). However the 6.5 deep shells seemed to stay with 3 ply shells, but good luck finding one of those 6.5s in any model snare.

Not sure on the value of this particular kit as prices are all over the place. The 20,13,16 configuration would probably be less desirable than the 20,12,16. I would guess that under $1000 would probably be a good deal.

I agree with powertone and my best guess if i was looking at it is 900.00 I am a bit wondering about a 13 inch tom with a much earlier serial number may have been a order or somewhere along the line someone replaced the 12 with the 13.

The 13 is a three ply keller most likely. Late 63 early 1964

The 102xxx number is Dayton, later 1968, five ply, speckled interior

The 75xxx number is aprox. 1967 and could be speckled interior, also five ply.

Rogers bearing edge profile changed before the introduction of the Beavertail, aprox the same time they began using the Keller shell. There are B&B drums with keller 3 ply shells. The Beavertail came out in 1963. 1/16 bearing edge, 45 degree double with offset, shells 1/8th less than call size.

These drums were never born as a set.

Probably a good call. I am a big advocate of saving your money and ultimately buying what your really want as opposed to every vintage drum that comes along because you can.

If you have doubts re the kit or an issue with a drum, so will the next buyer when you try to sell it.
