Leedy Utility? Last viewed: 18 minutes ago

Loading...

Hi,

I'm new to the forum. Great site!

I wonder if anyone can help ID this drum. I think it might be a Leedy Utility. It's missing the original top hoop and there is no badge, but it looks like a Utility strainer from what I can tell from searching this forum.

If it IS a Leedy Utility, that means it would date from the teens up to 1924, correct?

Check the photos- I think the lugs are brass (see the worn spot), but I'm not sure about the shell- a refrigerator magnet didn't really stick, but could it be possible that the shell is Nickel-over-Steel rather than NOB?

Can anyone help with further identification of this drum? Thanks!

Is that a 6.5 inch deep shell ?....

Looks like the Utility was available into the forties, but not available in a deep dish until after '34.... that's all the catalog scans I have to go by.

I like my 14x5 quite a bit, just playing it for my "Shorty" yesterday...hmmmmmm

Hi nsisauyhoat,

Your drum looks to be an early 1920s Leedy for sure. They called it the "new style multi model". The batter-side hoop isn't original as you may now. It should be a nickel over brass shell, for that matter all parts should have been nickel over brass. Hope that helps.

Thanks!

Yes, it's a 6.5 x 14. So, what distinguishes this drum as a "New Style Multi Model" as opposed to a Utility?

How collectible is the New Style Multi? Since I am in need of several parts to make the drum playable, should I search for original parts, or is it fine to use new parts such as the clips offered from drummaker.com? The original clips seem pretty fragile.

And does anyone have a source for an original batter-side hoop?

I found a catalog shot here: http://www.coopersvintagedrums.com/leedystrainers.htm. It's a great reference website for vintage drums. Original parts would be nice, but if you're going to play it I'd defintely buy some repro clips. If you prowl fee bay you'll find a batter side hoop eventually. I don't have a source for one, sorry. The collectability question is tough for this drum, I don't feel qualified to answer this one. Good luck with the restoration!

I'm still thinking a deep shell may not have been offered until late thirties or early forties....

Does someone some catalogs for those years?
