Rarity doesn't equate to value, Ambers are more common but more valuable than Red vistas. BTW Nice vid of Tull, !!
70s Vistalites Last viewed: 4 seconds ago
Thanks, Buzz. A few additional questions: Were the hoops on the Vistalite kits from the 70s wooden or acrylic? Did the buyers have a choice? Finally (I promise!), were there any kits that came with in-lays a different color from the kit itself (i.e., blue sparkle in-lays on a red Vista)?
To the best of my knowledge, Ludwig has never produced acrylic hoops.
In the beginning of their original run, I believe that Ludwig used red sparkle for the inlays on the red vistas. At one point, they either switched to red silk for the inlays (which is what mine have), or started giving buyers a choice, because I have seen quite a few red Vista bass drums with red silk inlays on the hoops. The Ludwig silk finishes were not very popular, because it was a fragile wrap that was super prone to scratching. So I am pretty sure that red silk had to be asked to be put on a Vista bass drum. I just can't imagine that there were enough red silk kits floating around to take the hoops from and put on a Vista kit. I have also seen vintage Vistas with silver sparkle inlays, and have really no idea of they were original to the kit or not. I think it's possible, because silver sparkle is what was used on the first runs of BLUE Vistas.
As with all things Ludwig, anything is possible, really. If you were buying from a dealer who was really tight with Ludwig, I think you you could pretty much get them to do whatever you wanted to a drum set.
Now, I disagree with Pounder. On average, Amber Vistas do not sell for more than a set of Reds in the exact same configuration, unless you have an Amber kit in the Bonham 14/16/18/26 configuration. If you have a vintage Amber Bonham kit, all bets are off; a kit like that is a Holy Grail to a lot of drummers.
And on a side note: IMO, the best bass drum size for an old Vista is 14x24. They flat out kill!
For $500, someone needs to be buying them. If not, let me know so I can buy them. Love the red vistas!
