Don't tell my wife!
Looks like No. 421 Brushed Silver finish in a Quadra-Plus with an added floor tom. Early 80's. There is a slight chance it could be No. 114 Silver Silk ... but I don't see it that way.
It's a 70's/80's Ludwig COW kit. (Chrome Over Wood) That's real metal on those drums, not wrap! Some drummers swear by those tubs. I think they are just too damn heavy to lug around to gigs. But they do sound great though and they have some fans among the vintage guys.
In the 70's Ludwig took a bunch of unsold white Vistalite shells and covered them in chrome too! I had a set of these COV drums, I'll see if I can track down a photo of them. So you'll see both, 6-ply maple and white Vistalite shells covered in metal from that era.

The COW is a much smoother (mirror) finish. This kit has a distinctive brushed look. Check out the pic I'm posting here. This is either a Silver Silk or Brushed Silver to my tired old eyes.
Re- finish: Metal finishes, unless you really protect them and keep up with them, will become hazy over time. Just from fingerprints it's difficult to see. You may be 100% correct, but it's just plain impossible to tell from a photo alone. All he has to do is look at a seam. He'll know if it's wrap or chrome/metal right away. My $ is on COW kit.
John
You are most likely correct, as my eyes are ... rough these days.
Have I ever told you how much I dug the Firesign Theater??? Totally cool. Have listened to them since ... early to mid 70s???

"I spell my name, DANGER!" LOL
Do you remember this one?
"Feeling left out of the New Age? Well, don't worry, brother. Just remember, there's a seeker born every minute!"
Great stuff.
I'm including a couple of shots of the Chrome Over Vistalite kit I mentioned earlier. Just one of many Ludwig curiosities from that era. These drums, like their 6-ply counterparts are heavy as hell and that is one of the drawbacks of owning them.

Im still in the Dallas area. Ill take more pics when I get home. The aluminum look on these is definatly not metal or steel. Its is some sort of film. It's a little wrinkled around some of the lugs. In the 1981 Ludwig "The Set Up" catalog there is a identicle drum on page 17, but it says its "Chrome-o-Wood, but I think they mis labled that. I dont have a 1980 catalog. Ill post more pics later.

Ok heres some close up pics. The finish on these has a thin film on a wrap. Looks like maybe the silk wrap. All the toms have large classic lugs on them. The toms are 4 ply and Kick is 6 ply. All the serial numbers are very close to each other. You can see on the pics how the wrap wrinkles a little around the lugs. All the concert toms have a matching trim rivited around the bottoms of the shells where the bottom heads would be

Contact Paper (of some type) over old wrap. I've seen this before on a lot of kits from the 70's. If you peel up a corner (take the head off a Tom) you'll see the old wrap.
