1960's Pearl President Kit

Loading...

I'm trying to gather some info on this drum set. I found it in an old storage unit that was sold off. It's a sparkling dark blue. I'll attach a picture. I don't have a bass drum, but I've got a lead on picking one up that matches the color. Could you guys fill me in? History, wood type, cost, and worth on the vintage drum market?

That pic is too small to tell you much about it. Got a bigger one?

I'm not sure if this is any better. I'll try and take some new pictures tomorrow. This is a picture of the badge.

It's my thinking that this badge comes from a early 70s rather than 60s President set, then again, I haven't studied the catalogs up close, so forum member Osaka Bop might know better.

Closer pics of the snare drum strainer, and the lugs would also help get you a better answer to your questions. These are a little more valuable than most MIJ drums just because they actually say 'Pearl.' That said, these are still most likely the same as all other MIJ stencil sets: constructed of luan wood, maybe 6 or 7 plies. If the bottom hoops have not been removed then the edges might be in good shape and that would help the set retain some of it's value. It really hurts that it's missing the bass drum.

My guess for a blue sparkle President snare, rack and floor tom? Maybe around $75-125 give or take.

There is the possiblity that they are a fiberglass or wood fiberglass mix, and I guess those are worth more to collectors, but again, not having the bass drum really kills the value.

Either way, these are not going to be worth a ton, but fun drums nonetheless. Some of us find these to be cool players sets.

Hey there, the 69 President`s here had that same badge- so they could be anything from 69 to about 73 - then all Pearl drums got the same badges - with President drumsets getting front bass drum heads that said "Pearl President".

Presidents are great but I am finding they don`t score giant resale values in the USA. Here in Japan a 5 -piece 70s President with two extra toms is currently on auction for 180,000yen (2,000$). Granted that kit was played and owned by a famous Japanese drummer- so there is name value on the drums as well. Find the bass drum- without it you have only a little value- the snare is going for about 150$ in the USA and the toms less each- but all together and working properly you might ask 400$ with a bass drum. Good luck to you.

I got a mint cond set of tiger`s eye 69 Presidents from the USA (4 drums) for 500$- but it was truly mint and the wrap was rare. That`s how I give you a 400$ quote as well as what seems to be the ending price for most ebay auctions on them.

Picked up this set to give my son for his birthday. Cleaned it up a little and did some reasearch. I am fairly shure it is a 1968 Pearl President set with the fibergalss shells. It has the diamond lugs and the tom mount is the one used in that year.

Wow, beautiful and very interesting. First off- fantastic findWalking

I don't see this wrap in the Japanese 68 catalog - so it makes a rarity but it looks from the photo that you have a badge on the bass drum and floor tom? I would love to see a close up of the badge, the snare strainer (throw off) and a shot of the inside of one of the drums- for a color check. A shot of the tom mount bar would also help give us all a definitive yes or no. Love it and congrats! A fantastic birthday present.

Here are some more pictures. My theory is that its a 68 set with some 67 left over parts. The wrap seems to be #7 Tigers eye from 68, the set also looks just like the #45 Challenger from that same year except for the badge and lug [Attachment: 29882]

[Attachment: 29887] (I found all this info at the Vintage drum guide sight). From people posts the diamond lugs may be 67ish left over stock?? The tom mount is seen on the #45 Challenger set and I have not seen that kind of mount on newer models. Now the badge I have not found except in this forum talk. It is what you say is a 69-73ish style. Thanks for the help

Perfect! and nice shots- exactly what I needed to see. It's a winner and a collector. Here's the Tiger's Eye I own from a 1969 President- notice how differently they have aged. Congrats once again, in Japan that is a highly sought after kit.
