Trying to date this old Pearl set... Last viewed: 12 hours ago

Hey! Guess I've moved from lurker to participant...

http://tinyurl.com/3mkyaxu

The tinyURL above is to the Facebook album of my old Pearl set. I've had it for nearly 30 years now, getting it used from my cousin when I was much younger.

The best match I can find looking thru the catalogs appears to be something in the era of a 1972 Pearl DELUXE, but I don't have enough experience to be certain. All of the badges are missing, so could be a US model or could be import.

The things I'm looking at include the "Professional" tom tom holders, the telescopic spurs, and the set screws on the one original cymbal stand I have left. The shell are all wood; there is no evidence of a fiberglass lining such as was used on some drums of the era. If there's a particular part that would help the ID, I can get more pictures up.

Motivation here is I'm currently using it in a show. Would like to be able to give a better answer than "Yea, it's a drum set..."

Thanks in advance for any help!

Jim

Welcome! We've been waitin' for ya...You can post pix here. When you are in the post mode, scroll down and you will see the second box, called "Attach Files" in that box click on "Manage Attachments". Another box will open and then you can choose the files from your computer. If they are too large, resize them and try again. I would need to see the interior of the bass and snare, the strainer and tom holder and mounts. Also, the lugs would be another indicator.

Welcome. Please accept two bits of friendly advice to make your participation in the forum more enjoyable.

1. Please learn that the metal discs that we use with our drums are spelled "cymbals". Some people might not be diplomatic in correcting this spelling error. Continued use of the wrong spelling would open you to as much criticism as a baseball player would receive when writing about his favorite "gluv".

2. I'm no authority on Asian drum brands. But, I am not aware of any Pearl branded drums for general consumption that were made in the USA. Maybe some Pearl endorsing artists have had drums custom made for them over here with Pearl badges slapped on them?

No matter how far you push the envelope, it is still stationery.

No Pearl drums were ever made in the USA. All were made in Japan until about 73-74, when they expanded production capacity and opened a plant in Taiwan, at which time those MIT were very distinguishable from Japan built drums in that the quality of MIJ Pearl went up while the MIT were less that quality equipment....still the same today, Japanese drums are of the highest quality and the Taiwanese and Chinese drums are mediocre at best.

Guys Pearl made some high-end drums in USA (I think it was Nashville) in the 80s.

Thanks! The link to the photos worked for me, but I'll post the photos ASAP.

The snare I am currently using is not the original; it's my son's concert snare, so I know where that one came from! I do not have the original snare.

Symbols!?!? Lame Completely overlooked that spelling. Not sure what I was thinking. Will blame my auto-correct...

When I was looking for parts (some of the lugs are getting brittle and breaking), some of the parts were described as a Pearl Export Style, but not made by Pearl. Due to lack of experience, I mistook this for import versus domestic. I assume this then actually refers to something like an OEM part for a car; made to look correct, but by a different company than the original.

Thanks,

Jim

Thanks Oddball! I think you have to be logged into FB for it to work. I did make the album available to everyone.

I tried uploading the photos, but it keeps giving me an error. Will try and post more later.
