rogers tall boy hoops

Loading...

i just got a powertone off ebay. it's a dayton tag, 23673. the listing said everything (but the heads) was original. The hoops, however, do not appear to be the 'tall boy' hoops that i've seen in pictures. They measure about one inch in total height, maybe one sixteenth more. Certainly not 1 1/4" like i've seen the tall boy referred to.

Should this drum have tall boy hoops, or did some powertones come with tall boys and some not over the years? many thanks for any guidance.

I believe that the tall hoops were phased out by the Dayton era. I'm sure the Rogers will chime in and give you a conclusive answer.

Yep! Tall boys stopped in the Cleveland production. They were primarily used on the Bread and Butter lug style drums.. I'm assuming because of the hide skins that were used. Industry standard changed to plastics and rogers introduced beavertail and shortly after the shorter hoops. Every once in a while you'll find a Beavertail drum with Tall boy hoops.. but this would be very early cleveland stuff.

If a drum with any Dayton number had tall boys...........you could sell them for three times as much as the proper dayton era rims would cost you.

Optikdrummer nailed it. Tallboy hoops were primarily used during the b&b lug era. A very few of the earliest beavertail drums had tall boy hoops.
