Sling snare bearing edge recesses?
That is the snare bed. Without it, the wire set will not lay properly across the snare side head, and the drum will sound like butt.

I used the double-sided from drum foundry on a snare, and it's held well so far (been maybe 5 years?).

Yes, definitely not a two piece, and I'm surprised someone said seamless. The earliest seamless shells were produced in the early 60s, AFAIK.
