If the area where the ply is missing is long and deep enough you can sandwich a few small scraps of veneer and glue them in to help take up the space....

Those are normally mahogany outer ply, poplar middile ply and mahogany inner ply 3 ply shells with solid maple re rings. Much like the old Radio Kings...
