    Hi Alan,
Thanks, but no apology necessary, we're just talking drums after all.

The 12x18 is a 3 ply with re-rings, typical of Gretsch for the time period. The 8x12 is a six ply RB drum.

I'm trying to locate a group of photos I have of the drums which I sent to a couple of Gretsch experts when I was looking for verification. I'll post them on VDF when/if I find them.

By the way, which style bearing edges does your '69 walnut set have?

    Hey orangemi,

I owe you a huge apology. A few years ago, I said publicly on this site that your RB natural maple 12x18 bass drum was stripped... because at the time no concrete evidence was reviled. However since then my research has turned in the direction that it is HIGHLY POSSIBLE that Gretsch did produced from late 1950s to probably about 1963 a factory natural maple finish. So with that said, I'm so sorry to creat such a fuss.

These drums are all late 1950s to early 1960s... so there are tons of stripped mid to late 1960s Gretsch RB kits out there.

I still have the only 100% original 1969 Gretsch RB walnut finished 14x18/8x12/14x14 bop kit (w/matching 5x14 snare drum) in North America. Oh well...

    Q: is your 18" drum a 3ply or 6ply?

    Alan Taylor from Dallas, Texas
