Bass Drum Art

Loading...

Over the years I have become a big fan of bass drum head art and I thought it would nice to have a thread where we can post interesting heads that we find during our journey through life. I did a search and didn't see a thread like this on here already so I fairly confident this isn't a duplicate post.

The following are heads that I have seen along the way and are all heads that are hand decorated and painted and predate the laser graphic heads that many companies now offer. Not that there isn't a lot of good art on those heads but I would like for this thread to remain about the art and hand decorated heads. Please feel free to add your own pictures.

Cool!

I think this a great idea for a thread. I don't have any pics to contribute but I will enjoy seeing what others will post.

Thank you!

I was using this kick for awhile until the basement flooded unbeknownst to me. I had put it in the higher room at the back but then that room flooded...only the one time. By the time I saw it the bottoms of the 25" (!) calfskin heads had been eaten through. What a drag!

I'm always trying to think what would be cool to put on my current reso...

This head is from my first kit, first band.. circa 1964.. The guy that painted it used to travel fairs, carnivals and showgrounds painting canvas billboards. He was on some sort of deal with sponsorship by many companies. I remember watching him at the Royal Easter Show in Sydney from when I was no more than six years of age. He was Indian I think, the deal was he would be perched high on a platform and would mesmerise large audiences by starting with a blank canvas and creating a logo or trademark (Aspro, Coke, Pepsi, etc ) which would only be revealed by his last few brushstrokes. We met him in a pub in Queensland where we were touring ,and asked would he do a BD head. The next day he came to where we were staying and did the head in about 20 minutes freehand with enamel paint. (It was Multi coloured on a black background). Impressed with his work, the guitarist then asked him to do the drivers side door of his old Ford Pilot with the same artwork. He did a good job of that too... but the car then became a "Cop Magnet".

Cheers

John
