Please help with my new mystery kit.

Loading...

Hi everyone. I'm the new guy. So I was looking for a supraphonic to go with my gigging kit and happened upon a kijiji ad where a guy was selling what appeared to be a supraphonic as part of a full vintage drum set complete with cymbals for $300. Long story short I ended up with an 81ish Supraphonic, early 80s Sabian "Regular Hats", an 82 paiste medium crash, and this mystery drum kit. Sizes 24, 16, 13 and 12. The guy claimed the kit was a Ludwig, but he didn't seem to know much about what he was selling me. Other than that it has been sitting in his basement untouched since 1982. So I'm looking to identify this kit, and if it's worth it to restore it. I only brought home one Tom and took off the wrap. The inside is painted, I'm assuming by whoever rewrapped the kit.

As you can see they're 3 ply with reinforcing rings. When I first saw that I assumed early 70s Ludwig, but the hardware isn't Ludwig. To add to the confusion though, the diamond shaped hole pattern you see was covered by the wrap, so it looks like hardware was replaced. Any help would be much appreciated.

The interior looks Ludwig, as does the "Ludwig Lump" where the plies overlap. Could be a nice project, but I'd go for Ludwig Lugs, etc, which could run into some money........marko

The lug is a Hoshino "sharktooth",and the shell looks Ludwig to me also. Do all the shells match? Maybe it was recovered to match, and the sharktooth lugs were there to complete it.

The 24, 16, 13 and 12 all match. There was an extra 13 that doesn't. It's got no reinforcing rings. The hole spacing on this lug (1.5") is not the same as a Ludwig though correct? There aren't any extra holes in the shell for the lugs. At this point I'm thinking that if the shells are Ludwig, it must have had Mach lugs on it and that's why they were removed when they were converted to concert toms. I can't find any info on the hole pattern for Mach lugs though.

Is the 24" kick a clue in all of this? How rare are they for MIJ kits, and did Hoshino offer them at all? The drums do seem to be well made. At this point I only have hardware to make a full 13" drum, and I don't have a 13" on any of my other kits. So I might just pick up 13" heads throw them on there and see what I think. I am after all interested in restoring this to use, not to sit and look at.

24" bass drums are not the norm for MIJ's,except for Tama's like Imperialstar and Superstar.

The plot thickens.

When I picked these drums up the other night, we didn't get back until late. I loaded them in to my rehearsal space and brought just the one 13" tom home. So I had a chance to go back and check out the rest of what I got today. It turns out that only the 13" and the 24" kick match. The rest are obviously cheaply made and not worth restoring. The kick is the same 3-Ply with reinforcing rings. Only it has completely different lugs. Pictured here.

These lugs look like Leedy. I've also been really puzzled by the diamond shaped hole pattern on the 13" for the original mount. The only mount I've been able to find with a diamond pattern without a larger hole in the middle is also Leedy. Am I crazy? Or could this be drums be Leedy?

This leedy and Ludwig early 50`s New Era kit has the lugs but not the T-rods. It also has diamond plate on the tom. It`s on this site somewhere !i

It could be a stencile though.

Did they do that then ?

It`s a drum,.....Hit It !!
