Great looking drum! That shell SHOULD be brass as all those old Ludwigs/WFL's made before 1962 had brass shells. For the person asking, the lugs on that are called Zephyr lugs and they were introduced in the late 30's. The design was basic but it emulated the look of the Zephyr trains that were very popular in America during the 30's.

Zephyr lugs were used up until the war where WFL had to use a wooden lug. After WWII WFL went back to the Zephyr lug but quickly changed to the new classic lug which came out in 1946 and is still used today. WFL felt that the Zephyr lug was past it's prime in 1946 and came up with the classic design.

You don't see many metal WFL snare drums from the 30's and when you do, most look pretty worn. Your drum is in great shape! Thanks for the pic.

AZBill, Yoshi, and wflkurt, thanks for your compliments on my drum. When I posted the pic, I thought this section was strictly pics and didn't think to look for any comments here.

I was not aware of it being brass, so thanks for the info on that, wflkurt. I do know that it feels heavy.

Oh, and wflkurt, I like your "world football league" tag line. As a lifelong Miami Dolphins fan, I remember being heartbroken as a little kid that Csonka, Kiick, and Warfield left my beloved phins for the "big money" of the WFL!

Zephyr's with the center shell bead recess. WOW.
Never seen those.
That is GREAT.
What great shape it is in.
