Ludwig Supraphonic COB Last viewed: 20 hours ago

Hello all -

I've a 60's supra w/ a badge in the 69000's. I've had a few others in my time ... & the ? is this: a pretty strong magnet BARELY sticks to the shell. It's almost negligible. On the other supras I've had from the 60's the magnet's been literally pulled into the shell STRONGLY.

The rims appear to be COB as the slight pull isn't there as it is w/ the shell.

What's the deal? Has anyone had an experience like this out in Ludwig land?

That number dates your drum to 1969. Ludwig was not manufacturing any COB Supra's at that point in time.

Thanks Purdie -

But, huh? A Keystone badge dated 69469 is between '64-65. As far as I know the were making them early 60's w/out #'s.

My mistake, I was looking at the 6-number badges. Still, the last of the pre-serial COBs appeared in 63'. After that...

A Supra shell that STRONGLY attracts a magnet?? All Supras are either Ludalloy or brass, neither of which strongly attracts a magnet.

There are two immediate 'tells':

There's only one way to tell for sure, but I hesitate to recommend it. Scrape a little metal from one of the lug holes. You'll know immediately if it's brass or not. The much less invasive way is simply to weigh the shell. A brass drum is going to be pounds heavier than an aluminum one. How heavy is the drum?

I have a 63' COB (red ball-bat muffler dates it to 63') and it's way heavier than my aluminum supra. There's no mistaking the weight of a brass snare drum. A COB will weigh in at 8/9 lbs. plus.

Appreciate all the comments -

The entire snare w/ rims on, etc, weighs 7 lbs 6.7 oz on a digital scale.

It is possible I'm confusing another manufacturer w/ the previous Supra that {I think?} attracted the magnet greatly. So perhaps it's Ludalloy after all.

Compare how the inward flanges are formed between this drum and your other "magnetic" Supras. Ludalloy shells usually have a straighter profile, while the brass shells are rolled back outward toward the inside surface of the shell..

Also - I know I'm not high about there being a definite pull of the magnet to the shell .... Just placed the magnet underneath the shell {snare on its side} & the damn thing holds to the shell if placed flat. &, no, the magnet is clean & not sticky.

Weird? Or very weird?
