Gretsch Progressive Jazz - Burgandy Sparkle Last viewed: 5 days ago

Interesting story ...

My 13 year old son is currently in the percussion section of Middle School band and he was telling me the two drum sets they have to use are in terrible shape. One set has a broken mounted tom and the other is missing a tom. :D

I told him I would take a look at both sets and determine which set was the better of the two. As a donation to the school's music department, we would fix any broken parts, clean the drums and replace all of the heads. The school was ready to purchase a new set to replace both existing sets.

I stopped at the school the other day to talk to the music director, tell her about our offer and examine the drum sets. Well this is what I found, 60's Round Badge Gretsch Progressive Jazz In Burgandy Sparkle (20/12/14/14-snare). Picture attached.

The band director accepted our offer and we started looking for the remaining parts to make the set complete. We were very lucky, because we found the original hi-hat stand, bass drum pedal and snare stand in another building's storage closet. We think we also found the original set's Zildjian hi-hat cymbals and Zildjian ride, but they are in use on another drum set at the High School. The only two minor original pieces we're still looking for are the bass drum cymbal arm and one of the bass drum spurs. Other than that the set is complete, even a set of original Gretsch snare wires (I think 40's) currently on the snare.

The drums are in good condition. The wraps on the drums looks to be in very good condition too. The inlay wrap on the bass drum hoops are loose, so we'll use some 3M adhesive to re-attach. We'll also clean up all the chrome and get a good coat of wax on the wraps.

After some additional research, I told the band director these drums are very good, only need some minor attention and that they are very lucky to have such a quality instrument. As we take apart the drums, we'll photograph and document the process. I'll post more pictures as we complete each step too.

My son is singing a different tune now that he knows what he will be playing on at the upcoming band concert. :D BTW, the other set is a Rogers R-380.

Any tips to help us along would be appreciated.

Thanks,

Tim H.

Hi and welcome. Nice story and great kit. Look forward to your rehab pics. I think the burgundy wrap might be somewhat rare. Hope your son enjoys playing them.

Good luck.

I have your twin, but your middle school band project appears to be in better shape! I'm not 100% certain, but have been told that mine are starlight sparkle. The FT is a totally different color than the BD and mounted tom.

Nice project, nice dad.

WOW.

You should offer the band a couple grand for that kit and a few hundred for the 380 and then they could buy a new (less collectable) kit to use at the school along with tons of other gear for the other band kids. I know that schools are hurting for money these days. Might be a good way to preserve these drums AND help the school get some more gear to improve their teaching ability.

Just a thought!

Darn good point.

That outfit is a bit over the top for the school band, IMHO.

Id say! I'd be nervous playing that thing and I have a champagne sparkle progressive jazz kit from the 60's!

I thought about this option, but the drum set was donated to the school by assistant band directors husband. Since there are other drum sets in the district, this one will stay within the building.

We tore down the mounted tom and floor tom tonight. It looks like they have the original resonant heads. They say Gretsch Permatone and they were fused to the hoop. Tags were present on the silver painted interior.

Mounted Tom - Model = 4415/Serial = 81888

Floor Tom - Model = 4417/Serial = 82714

Next is the Bass Drum and Snare.

On a side note, anyone every try to remove scuff marks on a coated resonate head with a Magic Eraser?

Thanks,

Tim

Started tearing the set down and found some damage on the floor tom wrap. What would be the best way to fix this? The wrap is really stiff. It I bend it, I am sure it will snap. Can it be heated up, slowly moved back into place and then glued?

It looks like the last time the heads were replaced, the wrap was pushed down.

Thanks,

Tim

Great story! I would certainly offer to purchase the kit and replace it with something better suited to the band members. I fear that such a nice kit as this won't last long with those who may not appreciate what it is. Let us know what happens.
