older Mapex snare - does anyone recognize this?

Loading...

I picked up a used 7 x 14" Mapex snare in great condition. The shell has 5 plies -- looks like birch (possibly maple) with 2 layers something much darker - with a cherry red transparent lacquer. The shell is ~6 mm or 1/4" thick with 10 lugs.

The rims are 3 mm, probably stamped, and they have thick, chrome-plated wire snare guards that protrude about 1" from the bottom.

All the hardware, with the exception of the snares, looks original and is in excellent shape.

In addition to the snare strainer shown, there's another one on the other side of the drum that's a fairly simple but well designed screw-type strainer, akin to what I have on my '30s era Ludwig field drum.

It has a bright sound, with a lot of overtones. I use a Powerstroke 3 batter head to dampen it a bit.

The drum's badge looks original but has no serial number. I'm trying to determine specifics about model and age.

Can anyone tell me the model and guesstimate the year it might've been built?

Definitely 90's snare... Birch/mahogany plys... I'm leaning towards the original Mars series but I'm not 100% sure. Maybe someone will chime in regarding the year. Hope this helps!

Cheers

Thank you. I've looked at old Mapex kits for sale on various web sites (pawn shops, etc.) and have seen only a few Mapex kits with hardware that matches what's on my drum.

I think you have to be right about its age, but I can't tell if it's Mars or Venus. [ I was playing Ludwigs back in the '90s, so I don't know the early Mapex product offerings very well at all. ] I've looked for old catalogs online and can't find anything.

Does anyone know how to distinguish the 90's era Mapex product line? Can you tell by looking at the hardware?

Thanks. I may check with Fork's Drum Closet in Nashville. They're the "company store" for Mapex USA. What the heck?

I know this is an old post but I have the same snare, I'll post some pics, and I'm interested if anyone has gotten any additional info. Also one of the lugs on mine is stripped and I was hoping to find a replacement.

Let me know if you would like to sell the Mapex snare drum please. I have a kit that would fit nicely with.

I really kind of like this snare but what do you think it would be worth? I guess for the right price I could be persuaded. Message me.
