While working on a couple of Slingerland kits, I noticed the differences in the edges.
The 68 kit has seriously rounded over edges.
The 71 kit has rounded with a double cut (slight on one side, more extreme on the other).
The 79 kit has a more definite double cut with no rounded area.
I found this to be very interesting. It's not surprising, but it is kinda cool.
Anyone else wish to chime in with the edges on your Slingerland kits? I'd be curious to see some more examples.
I have 3 slingerland sets my 68 and 71-ish kits mimic your edges to a t. My late 70s 5 ply set has very similar edges to the late 70s 3 ply-er you have.
My late 50's early 60's-ish Slingys have rounded edges.
Funny, my 60's kits have rounded edges while this 50's bass I just got has a slight roundover with a 30 degree, more like the middle picture.
Yes, that's very interesting. The first pic is definitely a roundover. The second one resembles a custom made edge that Rob Kampa cut for me on a custom kit I had made for a friend of mine.. It's a 30 degree inner bevel with a sharper counter cut and a very slight rounding of the edge.
So this thread got me looking at all the bearing edges on my kits and I noticed something strange. My early 70s Slingerland kit was pieced together by the previous owner, and sloppily restored. I assumed however that the drums were all from the same era. But under closer inspection it seems that the floor tom is earlier as it has the rounded bearing edges.
Am I going crazy or is this indeed a rounded bearing edge?
I think it, and that makes me pretty excited as it will more closely match my 60s kit and gives me further reason to wrap it in some nice BDP to match it!

On your 71 is that 30 degree bevel very consistent around the entire drum? It's definetely not consistent on the drum in question. Some areas it is far more rounded.

I bought a Slingerland COS snare on eBay. Serial no 13653 which I think makes it around 1974, Sounds pretty good but I'd like to ask about a couple of things:
1 When i took the head off I was suprised to find no angled bearing edge - just a simple edge with the metal folded back tight on itself. I hope that's normal in Slingerlands of that era and that I havent bought a fake. Does anyone know?
2 The shell is out of round - slightly flattened at the point where the edges of the sheet that makes up the body join. That join has a reinforcing plate (inside the drum of course) which looks original - as opposed to having been added later. Would a specialist shop be able to get it back in shape - or would that even be worth the cost?
Any thought comments or advice will be welcomed.
