Do I really need a 10 1/2" drum head?

While looking for a tom-arm for my Deri Tom-Tom at Fork's Closet in Nashville, the vintage drum guru Clay Fuqua pointed out that my drum had a "Banjo" head on it. They didn't have the Tom arm -but they did have everything else I needed to finish my 1978 Pearl set. So - anyway having spent all my money on the last of my Pearl drum needs I didn't even think to look into purchasing a new drum head for this drum while I was in the company of so many drum guru's because I thought it was a 10" tom - only to find out 400 miles later (after I got home) that it's actually a 10 -and a half inch- head. So my question to you guys is - where can I get an affordable 10 1/2" drum head? Everything I see on-line is in full inch increments.

Remo makes these size head's for banjo's in many sizes..I would check with a guitar shop near you.I would also take the old head with you to check size...Mikey

Remo can make any type head for you, so you won't have to settle for from their stock. Call and talk to a Rep about what you want, they'll work the magic.

It is probably a 270mm drum-------possibly a 265. The Banjo head will work fine on the reso side-------thin heads give a little more sustain and the banjo heads are pretty much like diplomats.. Yes, Remo can do the head for you------it's a bit of a long process , though. You have to buy the head at a retail price ,through your dealer but you can order it through Remo. Remo will want the measurement in inches, so you have to be sure on the measurement. If it is a 265mm , then 10 1/2 will work. If it is a 270mm, then you will need 10 3/4"-----and you have to make sure that the head-hoop will fit inside the skirt of your drum's hoop. Also , Remo has a standard, drop( collar) on the heads-----I think it is about 3/8"( I have seen other, though). You have to make sure, the head will tension without bottoming out. Some drums need a thinner collar. Remo , likes to have the drum and hoop in hand, so there are no mistakes.

I currently have Remo making me two 13 3/16" heads for a tom that measures right at 13". They said it should take 3-4 weeks. Yes, do measure the inside collar of the hoop to make sure a 10 11/16" head will work (Remo recommended 3/16" bigger than the diameter of the drum, assuming it will fit in the hoop).

I don't know if an 11" head would be to big for the shell or the hoops, but I know that Columbus Pro Percussion has one of the largest selection of Remo heads in the country, and last time I was there they had 4-11" heads in stock on their shelf! This may or may not work, but it's just a suggestion.
