Star bass drum?

Loading...

This has me beat. I can't work out what this drum is, apart from it being a Star stencil of some sort. I found this on the street, along with a rack tom with only the top lugs and hoop, and the bottom lugs and hoop missing. Also no wrap.

The reasoning behind my Star stencil idea is the hardware - rail mount, lugs and cymbal mount, which all match those made by Star, according to the Vintage Drum Guide. But the grommet and badge placement, plus whatever the badge was are complete mysteries to me! In the first pic is the bass shell (previous owner had spray-painted black over a nice blue marine, which is a bit of a tragedy. Also sprayed the interiors of both, which is a pain to get rid of... not sure if I should bother). Note the glue residue and badge shape where the badge was, which was spray-painted over and has been removed or fallen off or whatever.

But where it is (off to the side left of the rail mount as you would see if you were playing them) seems odd to me. Was it common for badges on MIJ kits to be off to the side?

Other pics are of the hardware. The big Star giveaway to me was the double wing bolt cymbal mount.

But the badge shape doesn't match anything I can find. The closest approximation is the Kawai and Sons badge, but that points the other way and is considerably larger, looking at pics on www.star-drums.de

Not sure what I'm going to do with these yet (they're in pretty poor shape), but I'd still like to know what they are.

Any ideas, Lads?

Thanks,

Trev

Lastly, the badge. Or at least where it used to be. This is what's really stumping me. What the hell is it??

Hello Trev,

I have some Star kits but none of mine have that cymbal mount

I also have a few Hoshino made kits

please note that this "Hoshino"

has nothing to do with the Hoshino associated with Star

The cymbal mount you show with the two tension wing screws is identical to the cymbal mount brackets on my Hoshino kits

I would be curious to see the lugs from the mounted tom

+2 on Hoshino. Have same twin wing-nut mount on a 16 lug 3 re-ring 20" bass red sparkle. Great drum!!

Nothing special here but I like them.

Wow, cymbal mount, Hoshino as in Canora for example, but the the two screws? This stuff is very random in this era, I have a kit that looks like it never had badges? I have a star kit with no cymbal mount? the rail is Star.

Thanks for the replies, Gentlemen.

ChristianB: yes, 3 re-rings in the bass. I'll see if the pic can load (had to muck around with resizing and might've missed the interior shot)

Kenwood: you mean Hoshino Gakki? There was a post on DFO about identifying vintage Pearl and Star. Can't seem to find it now, but there was a pic of that exact twin-wing bolt cymbal mount, which made me immediately jump to Star rather than Hoshino. Mind you, I haven't yet had a good look at Hoshino. Can you post a pic of yours?

Creighton: this one's a 22". Seems to be relatively intact, apart from the sh!tty paint job and the wrap that's bubbling pretty badly.

Alot2008: whereabouts are you? I found this in Sydney, north of the Harbour Bridge when I was checking out a house my father was interested in buying. There it was in all it's defiled glory! Love to see your kit though.

So, learned Counsel, is this worth fixing up or should I turn it into furniture or art? I quite like the hardware, so am tempted to fix it up. Maybe new wrap as well, since the tom is naked (it's a 13x9", by the way). Just need a floor. Having issues with this stupid iPad though, as far as posting pics... I'll try to post some pics of the tom lugs, hang on...

Oh, what about the badge mystery? Any ideas?
