I remember getting my first paid for set of sticks from the Montgomery Ward catalog.

$2.00 bucks and I remember my dad picking them up from the catalog store in the small town I grew up in.

He was not happy I bought a pair of drumsticks because he didn't want me to be a musician, especially a drummer.(I used to hide my drumsticks in my pant legs when I came home from school so my dad didn't know that I had been at band practice)

So a few weeks later I bring them to Jr high band practice to show them off and Vince Colaiuta has his drum set in the bandroom and he's going to play the Horse with the band.

I say hey Vince you want to try out my new sticks and he says sure.
As it turns out the nylon tips were plastic and not very durable.

About halfway through his drum solo the sticks are no longer tipped with anything but the wood ends.

What a blast from the past. I guess I wasn't alone when drooling over the catalogs as a kid.

Then my dreams came true when I was 11, For Christmas I got this 4 piece set of Sears / Whitehall /Pearl. whatever they were. But they were the best to me. First time I had a high hat and floor tom. I really learned to play on that little kit. I was looking at some recent pics of me playing and I still have that exact same grip and posture.
I wish I still had that kit.
Yep, my very first set the Remco Liverpool Compact. Straight from Sears. Great thread! d.

My Kent set was from Sears in 1965. They were great sounding drums, at I thought so.

The first time I had a detailed conversation with Richie Hayward, he told me his first drumset was from Montgomery Ward.
