Default Slingerland snare

It was a strange day. I answered a Craigslist ad and went to buy a cymbal stand. I wound up buying the stand, a set of Zildjian hihats (Newbeats or pre-Newbeats, not sure yet), and the Slingerland snare below.

I'm not really a collector, but I seem to attract this stuff. The snare is cleaning up nicely, other than a few scratches there are no problems. The throw works well, and everything looks original... as a matter of fact the heads were both Slingerland heads and appear to have never been changed. Anyway, I cleaned it up and put a new batter head on it, and it sounds fantastic... similar to my acrolite.

Sooo... what is it? Is it Radio King family? Is it student model? It has the black & silver Niles badge, serial #26388. thanks for the help!

Hi,

Nice find, that cleaned up nicely. That is Slingerland's Student Aluminum Shell model #140. It was produced from '65-79. Your serial number indicates that it was produced around 1975.

Hi Cassidy,
Your snare is an aluminium student model number 140, from the mid 70's.
I own one myself, under rated drums, they sound great.
Congrats on your purchase and enjoy!!

Cheers Stevo.

Yes, it sounds similar to the acro. I think it's pretty cool, definitely gonna keep it. I feel kind of guilty though... I was going to buy a cymbal stand for $20. Then the guy asks if I want these old Zildjian hihats for $50 more... and when I say sure and hand him a 100 dollar bill, he says he has to get change in the house, unless I want this snare over here on the shelf for an even $100. So the snare was $30. A good day.

Great day of shopping for you. I knew a couple kids that had those in elementary school band. I didn't know what to think of them then because I was so proud of my Acrolite but now I'd love to have a chance to run one through the paces.

Right back at you Stevo! Funny how that happens sometimes!

Oh and Cassidy, that was a sweet deal at $30!
