Default Found a mid 50's gretsch all 3 ply!!!
I'm new to the forum and I'm trying to find out more about my gretsch I just found at a thrift store. It's a 3 piece round badge gretsch in the black diamond pearl. All drums are 3 ply and in pretty good shape. The bass is 22x14, floor tom is 14x14, and the rack tom is 12x8. It did come with a Ludwig pioneer snare in the same wrap and is from 1965. I have done a lot of research but I still can't figure out what the exact year is? I also can't find the exact model? I have looked at a lot of old magazines and I'm assuming it's the broadcaster progressive jazz kit. How rare is a kit like this? Also what kind of value would this set have? It was missing some lugs and hoops and I did get them all replaced with vintage parts.

Nice! The 14x14 is pretty tough find and command a high dollar. Not sure about the configuration though because the Progressive Jazz set up I believe came with a 20inch kick not 22inch. Awesome kit regardless

Yes I got one awesome deal. It was actually only 10 bucks. They thought it was broken because the heads were torn and some of the lugs were missing. After searching for the remainding parts I am into it about 300. I still need to get die cast hoops. Do the die cast hoops make a big difference in the sound? Anywho here are a few pics. Thank you for the info.

Wow! What luck!
Yes, to me the die cast hoops are a part of the Great sound. $300 into it? I'd say your still way ahead!

The hoops that are on it are from a friend of mine. He bought a new gretsch that had those on them and he took them off and bought die cast. The toms each came with 1 stick chopper each. I'm trying to find a good place that sells the die cast at a decent price.

20 years ago I found a mid 50's Gretsch set 22-14-12 with a 4x14.
So, the 22 with 12 and 14 is not unusual to me.
I wish I would've kept them!

I think it came with stick choppers originally and would try to find those to replace your missing hoops . But for now you have the ones from your buddy to use so that works out well . Personally I like the sound with those over the die cast .

Thank you for everyone's in put. I'm very new to collecting. This set was by accident and got me into the whole vintage drum scene. Learning the history has really started a whole new love of drumming for me. Are there any books out there that could help me try to narrow down the year these were made?
