Levon Helm snare on Last Waltz

Loading...

Hey guys,

Any idea of that snare that Levon Helm is playing on the Last Waltz?

Looks to have wood hoops and maybe 5x14 size...guessing though. I know he used both Gretsch and Ludwig kits back then. Just wondering, but I like that sound.

Thanks!

Been trying to research this to provide a accurate answer. Looks like the snare is not a match to the set he played for that show. I was able to find a picture on google where he was playing a set that looks to match it. That set is a Ludwig. The logo on it is where the L connects with the G on the end. I forget what they call this logo, i know is was 70s.

from what I can tell, he used two kits on the Last Waltz. The wooden Ludwig kit and another kit which was a pearl type of wrap.

Anyhow, I assume it is a Ludwig snare but I can't seem to find much information on it.

Right, there were 2 kits. I think the pearl finish might be Gretsch, but not sure. But that snare is too cool. Looks like a natural finish wood drum with wood hoops, but haven't a clue what brand it is!

Hi,

Here is one possible snare candidate, not sure what it is myself, check the tensioners. Three shots, first and third from Toronto show, other from Guelph show, found at URL below:

In some pictures -- not these --I believe I see a supra (maybe, possibly, perhaps).

It also seems that there were two basic kits from the emergence of the band (post the Hawks); the "King Harvest" mongrel kit with woodhoops, and the BOP Gretsch. These two kits seem to have been around from 68-76. Sometimes they were both onstage so Richard and Levon could drum together as in Ballad of a Thin Man.

Throughout this same period, the same very simple possibly six lug snare seems to be onboard for all major shows and recordings. The tensioners seem to be set up for tightening from the batter side, by hand. I don't know what it is, but these pictures might help someone identify it.

This should answer your questions, as it has been covered here before :D :http://www.vintagedrumforum.com/showthread.php?t=5726&highlight=waltz+drums&page=2

And here: http://www.vintagedrumforum.com/showthread.php?t=18971&highlight=waltz+drums

BTW, the "pearl" kit in question in the Last Waltz was a Gretsch kit.

As much as I'd like to grab one of these old snares, I'm at the point where I have more than my share...both new and vintage. When it comes to the old stuff, it's still hard for anything to beat my Radio King...if we're talking wood snares here. It always pleases my ears.
