Re: for you Ludwig 3ply owners- heads and tuning

I have a set of 3-ply Standards that I restored. I started out with Evans coated G2s on top and clear G1s underneath. I am currently using coated G14s instead; they provide similar enhanced tonality...

Re: Pawn Shop steal - A Zildjian & CIE Constantinople ride

It was based on my quick perusal of eBay and Reverb listings last night, and represents the high and low listings I found. It doesn't include cymbals from the later "Vintage Rarities" line, which...

Re: Ludwig Atlas tom mounts on vintage drums

I use an Atlas mount on my 3-ply rack tom, and it sounds killer. I didn't have it shell-mounted before to compare it with the Atlas mount, but I know there's definitely a difference from when I put...

Pawn Shop steal - A Zildjian & CIE Constantinople ride

I was drawn by forces beyond my understanding to a local pawn shop where I saw a beautiful, aged ride cymbal poking out of a stack of B8s leaning against a counter. As I picked it up and examined the...

Re: Bar Chimes?

Agree with txalapartalari - I primarily use them for theater. If I had a sample pad I would rather use that, as the chimes are very easy to jostle by mistake and then they ring for ages.

They...

Re: Why I believe Pearl Exports are in decline, from a seller's point of view

Another major factor in the decline of Exports: The ISS mount. The worst isolation mount ever. Pearl finally ditched it for their latest version of the Export, but the ISS is still stock on Vision...

Re: Let's see what you're currently playing!

For some blues gigs last month, I was gigging my beloved Ludwig Standards. They got rave reviews. What a killer sound from those old 3-ply shells.

For the theater gig I'm currently playing, I...

Re: Old hardware anyone?...

Once you get all that sorted you could be a one-man parts supplier for years! Nice find!

Re: Gigging with Only A Tom Tom/Bass/Snare

I'm a reformed prog-rocker. I used to think that I would be lost without five or six toms. Then I got older and less able to carry all that steel and wood with me everywhere. I now use a 4-piece...

Re: There Are Days!!!

After years of playing a huge fusion kit with all the stands, I'm very happy with my 4 piece 3-ply Ludwigs and my three stands. And you know what? I get more compliments on holding a tight groove...

Re: Ludwig Standards

Even if the wrap is trashed, if the shells are still good, snap them up. Great drums, and you can always rehabilitate wrap or rewrap them as a player's set if the wrap is beyond help.

Re: Problems with tom mount

There's three major diameters of l-arms on the market - 9.5mm, 10.5mm, and 12.7mm.

Many older drums (including Ludwig) used the 9.5mm. 10.5mm are common nowadays, used by Tama, PDP, Gibraltar,...

Re: Problems with tom mount

Nope, it's only meant to replace lugs. It will fit any size tom arm with the provided inserts, though.

Re: Ludwig Standards with Strata Finish

That's the great part. In order to compete with the offshore budget kits, Ludwig outfitted their top-of-the-line 3-ply shells (the same ones that are so highly prized on this forum and elsewhere)...

Re: Problems with tom mount

Sounds like you have either 10.5mm or 12.7mm tom arms, when the old Ludwig mounts took 9.5mm arms only. No mystery: you have modern L-arms and the Ludwig is not modern.

Gibraltar makes replacement...

Re: Ludwig standard avocado strata!

I would keep them as-is as far as lugs. The Standard lugs don't scream Ludwig, but they aren't bad quality, and they do the job well.

As far as the tom mount, my Standards came without the...

Re: Ludwig p-85 strainer loosens

There's a real divided camp in Ludwigland over the P-85. Some (like me) have owned multiple Ludwig snares with P-85s and have never had a bad experience. Others report loosening, binding, lack of...

Re: Evans sound off drum mute pads

No more than regular playing of the drum without the mute would. Force should be evenly distributed around the bearing edge, resulting in something that the drum is structurally designed to...

Re: How Many Years Have You Been Playing

Started playing in the 80's in high school. My first instrument was sax, but with the British Invasion nobody was playing sax in rock music anymore, so I picked up bass, and then drums because there...

Re: Fender Starcaster Drums?

These are sold through Costco and are just crap. I see them on Craigslist all the time and they ask $400 or $500 for the set... which they got for about $350 and overpaid by $200 for. Horrible stuff.

Re: Ludwig Standard Snare

Last year I was playing two weeks of a rock musical and I had two snares with -- a Pearl Sensitone Elite BOB and the Standard aluminum snare. The Pearl kept detuning so I put the Standard up there,...
