Re: 1971 Ludwig... opinions?

Looks Beautiful in the pictures, Not $1750 worth of beautiful but they do appear to be in above average in condition.

I don't wish to condone this sort of pricing but it is your money so if buying...

Re: Ludwig 20x18'' Floor Tom

Normally the wrapped drums of that era were mahogany/poplar/maple but it seems that the bigger floor toms (18 and 20) often have mahogany interiors. Not sure of the reason for that but yours is not...

Re: Ludwig Standard

Beautiful Bronze Strata! It took me a long while to find a snare in that wrap for my collection. That cymbal arm bracket does seem oddly placed, lower than normal.

Those newer spurs are an...

Re: Early 80s Ludwig?

That was the era of the riveted wraps (seam reinforced by a row of small rivets to combat shrinkage) which wasn't a shining moment in Ludwig history, but really they were making great drums at the...

Re: Another Ludwig Standard on CL

Those spurs are an unfortunate mod, and if you want to get real nit picky that's the wrong tom holder on the bass drum, although still a Ludwig. So the center hole was drilled out too. That's a less...

Bronze Strata, that's cool.

Re: Ludwig Standard on CL

That's probably not an outlandish price due to the wrap. Lemon Strata seems to be one of the more sought after of the Strata finishes which puts them at a premium over the more common ones like blue...

Re: Ludwig Standard on CL

Looks like an Avocado strata bass with two Gold Strata toms.

That seems pretty high. Values for these are on the rise but that set looks pretty beat. Maybe if they were all Avocado but even then...

Re: What's more frustrating...

That's some mighty pretty "transition" Oyster Black.

There's always 2 seams on any drum bigger than 16" that's wrapped in standard drum wrap. Generally they tried to locate those seams near the...

Re: Help dating a Kent kit?

My Kents looked just like that inside. A single ply wrapped over itself. I had a 20 and a 12 that I bought at an auction about 30 years ago. The two Kent drums came along with a Slingerland 14x14 and...

Re: Keystone Badge Club Dates............worth the price?

If those were close to me, and I had the money, I'd consider them. Even at that price. Looks like maybe a mix of nickel and chrome, but might just need some parts polished. The rail appears to all be...

Re: Help dating a Kent kit?

I'd guess that MIJ Kent shells would be typical stencil type luan construction. The USA Kent shells were usually maple. The ones I used to have were actually a single ply of maple wrapped over on...

Re: Vintage Ludwig 3-ply, 12x18 Bop!

Beauties for sure.
What year are those? Early enough in the B/O badge era that they aren't cortex finish. The '75 catalog uses the same picture as they had used since the '71 catalog of natural...

Re: Ludwig Transition Badge "Jazz Fest" value?

That wrap would be the most significant factor. Same drum in same condition in red or blue sparkle or WMP would be a $400-500 drum.

Re: Vintage Ludwig 3-ply, 12x18 Bop!

How about the Ludwig "Jazztette" ? Just one extra letter, the word is just slightly longer and sounds almost the same.... ;)

Re: Vintage Ludwig 3-ply, 12x18 Bop!

That could be a sweet deal for someone, although the large lugs and the muffler placement on the 12", as well as the color, don't quite fit with the early 70's birthdate the seller is stating.

Re: Vintage Ludwig 3-ply, 12x18 Bop!

But why? 14x18 works just as well for all practical purposes. That's the standard "bop" bass drum size for every other manufacturer...and Ludwig might have considered it as such as well since they...

Re: Marketplace Ludwig Rocker kit $50

Wow! Classic lugs, an acrolite snare, and some Zildjians, all for fifty bucks! I'm half tempted to make a road trip to Missouri.

Re: Vintage Ludwig 3-ply, 12x18 Bop!

Way back when (this debate has been going on for decades) someone (I forget who) suggested calling the set configuration with the slightly deeper bass drum a "Jazzaire".

here's all of them... Bronze is second up from the bottom, gold above that. Similar, but not the same.

Re: Vintage Ludwig 3-ply, 12x18 Bop!

14?! Blasphemy!....you obviously haven't been paying attention.

I have one too. 14x18 60's Keystone in red sparkle with no mounts at all (untouched for the very first time).

Just don't call it...

Re: Vintage Ludwig 3-ply, 12x18 Bop!

I'd (almost) kill for a Thermogloss Maple Jazzette, I'd swoon for a mahogany one too, but I'd even be happy with this little purple number...(other pictures I saved from somewhere along the way).

Re: Vintage Ludwig 3-ply, 12x18 Bop!

Saving the picture is all I could afford

Saw a guy playing a set just like that at an outdoor gig in Champaign, Illinois probably 14-15 years back. We were playing across the park under a...

Re: Ludwig Standard snare price check

I have six of them and they all have that jazzfest sound. Whether that's a good or bad thing is up to the listener but they are only the "poor man's jazz fest" because they tend to cost less, not...
