Re: Tension rods, cleaning, rust, soaking

With water! Think about mixing a sink to do dishes. Use about 4x the amount of Dawn for parts. I go heavy.

Re: Tension rods, cleaning, rust, soaking

For badly rusted rods I use Dawn soak for a day or two. When removing, use a toothbrush to clean out the threads. Then let dry and polish. I only chase the threads of they’re damaged as this will...

Re: Cleaning Wrap Finishes

I start with soap and water to remove surface dirt first, as this may cause scratches later. Depending on the severity of the surface scratches, Novus is a decent plastic polish, as is Meguiers...

Re: Vintage Ludwig 3-ply, 12x18 Bop!

I found a Jazzette last year that was rough! Spray painted black inside and out. The BD is 18x14 with no extra holes, and the rail mount is offset(not on top). Badges date them to 64, all 5 digit. I...

Re: This is the Display Your MIJ Drums Thread

This was a recent score I picked up to restore and sell to a friend who was seeking a set without dropping a lot of coin. Scored a Ludwig 1121 Flat Base HH stand to keep, and cleaned these up. Heit...

Re: Opinions: Hawthorne Drum Shop

I’ve met and talked to Chris at some recents drums shows. I’ve also spoken to multiple dealers and sellers/buyers locally and through the internet. While I do some buying and selling, it’s only a...

I read it as he has been a friend almost 40 years.

Re: Ludwig Downbeat 1965

As he mentioned, the snare is a 4x14. That’s a $400+ dollar piece by itself! The kit is $1000 easy simply because it is a matching KB kit. A few parts will deduct a couple hundred easy. Just trying...

Re: Ludwig Downbeat 1965

Looks like a nice players kit. As far as value? I’ll chime in. Common color, will need a few parts, has some nice “patina”. Desirable configuration and has the matching snare. $1500 minimum, but to...

Re: This is the Display Your Sonor Drums Thread

Yes, all the lugs are plastic. I’ve found a replacement lug for the snare drum from a Sonor guy overseas.

Re: This is the Display Your Sonor Drums Thread

Thanks, I plan to clean them up and put a couple new heads on them. Thin shells, they should sound good! Just need one lug for the snare drum.

Looking for a single Sonor Swinger plastic snare drum lug to repair a snare drum. Snare has center bead. PM please. Would take 3 if you have them, but really only need one.

Re: This is the Display Your Sonor Drums Thread

Scored a set of Swingers today. OK sound for such an inexpensive kit. Complete with hardware, key, snare drum and Avanti cymbals. Told they are about 1971, some ink stamps inside several are “208”....

Re: Paint stripping over a wrap

I did all the sanding outside, so the dust was no problem. Use a mask if you’d like. As far as any chemicals, I stay away from them except on bare wood shells for fear of wrap damage. Once that Seam...

Re: Paint stripping over a wrap

Well, I have good news and bad. The good news is it can be saved! The bad news: it will take you 20+ hours of meticulous sanding to do it right. Start with 200-300 grit until you see wrap, doing like...

Re: What's with Acrolite (and Blackrolite) prices?

I agree! Saw one listed for $349 recently, wth? Jazz Fests for $300, Pioneers for $300, what’s going on?

Re: Is my Acrolite really 1964?

Mike is correct, I used to have one with COB hoops and foolishly sold it about 10 years ago. It had a different sound. Anyone who say COB hoops done make a difference on a metal shell isn’t listening!

Re: Ludwig Value

On an original kit like that? Definitely worth less. Comparing against the same unmodified kit, probably 20% less or more. It would have to be sold as a players kit.

Re: Anyone else get disheartened at all the greed in the vintage drum market?

The only sure thing in life is CHANGE. Yes, the market has evolved, and yes prices have changed. Yes, there is lots of stupid prices being asked, but overall I feel the market is good! We’re talking...
