Re: Vintage Ludwig Club Date Kit Wrapped In Gold Strata

Hard to know for certain but that combination seems to push beyond the realm of special order, and the Standards and Club Dates were similarly priced so what would be the point?

My guess is that...

Re: I Have Never "Gotten" Gretsch Drums

Gretsch only made one line of drums until the early 2000s when they signed a distribution deal with Kaman who started putting the name on some imported lines to give them different pricing tiers....

Re: latest project snare

Drum weighs 22.5 lbs. Sure seems a lot heavier than that when you pick it up though. I guess because I'm used to similar sized snares weighing no more than 7-8 pounds at the most. Going to try it out...

Re: I Have Never "Gotten" Gretsch Drums

Not really aware of any buyers guides for any of the vintage drum makes. One thing for certain is RB 18" bass drums have gone thru the roof price wise. The later badges are pulled upward by that as...

Re: I Have Never "Gotten" Gretsch Drums

Gretsch had very little presence around here when I was a lad. 125 miles due west of Chicago you can bet that Ludwig and Slingerland ruled the roost. I was aware of Gretsch thru ads in Downbeat...

Re: latest project snare

I'd like to know what it weighs as well. My guess is between 20 and 30 pounds. Our bathroom scale seems to be MIA at the moment and nothing else I have has the capacity to weigh anything this heavy....

Re: Calling on Slingerland Experts

That might turn out oversized if you added wrap to it.

Re: latest project snare

Thanks!
I haven't really messed with the tuning as yet, hard to do when the wife's around. In the video it's just the sound I ended up with from tightening the heads by feel. It sounds better in...

Re: latest project snare

Okay my video link has turned into a black box. I guess just search "duluth cast bronze" on youtube.

latest project snare

Okay, not vintage, but it will be someday, and I suspect that people that hang here will find it of interest...and I did use vintage style lugs

Re: DW Buys Slingerland Name

The drums I was talking about were all USA made and badged as DW. The Taiwanese drums were from the Buddy Rich Drum Co. which came later under the auspices of Cathy Rich. I'm not sure what, if any, ...

Re: DW Buys Slingerland Name

DW already sorta did that a long time ago. They made some Buddy Rich tribute sets and even made a BR snare with Buddy's picture on it. I never quite got the connection, I guess it was either Buddy...

Re: DW Buys Slingerland Name

Not sure that DW has really changed much in regards to Gretsch. The imports still come from wherever they come from and the high end stuff all still comes from the same plant it's been made in since...

Re: Correct Size for Gromment for Gretsch Round Badge Bass Drum Badge?

Brass tubing and a flaring tool like they use to make brake lines. A double flare is very similar to the flange on a standard drum grommet. There are some videos on youtube about how to make double...

Re: DW Buys Slingerland Name

Based on what Bill Ludwig has to say in his autobiography I believe the feeling was mutual.

About what I said about DWs in my earlier post. I have used DW backline sets on a few occasions and...

Re: DW Buys Slingerland Name

DW drums have never appealed to me. I know they are highly thought of but I don't like the look of the lugs and I guess I was just so indoctrinated by the big four (Ludwig, Gretsch, Rogers,...

Re: Correct Size for Gromment for Gretsch Round Badge Bass Drum Badge?

Just measured the hole on a three ply bass drum (badge and grommet are missing) and it is 9/16ths" in diameter. Grommets on these were held in place by friction (they did not go into the interior of...

Re: DW Buys Slingerland Name

I think the main reason behind the purchase may be a love for vintage American drums on the part of the owners of DW. If I were extremely rich I might have looked into buying the brand, not because...

Re: DW Buys Slingerland Name

Did he actually sell the name or just license it? He's usually pretty smart in that regard. Licensing the name for a fee and a piece of the action rather than getting one lump sum. He's done this...

Re: DW Buys Slingerland Name

So now DW owns Slingerland and distributes Gretsch...who own Leedy (Fred Gretsch cannily kept the Leedy trademark when he sold Slingerland). So maybe, just maybe, some Slinger-Leedy drums could...

Re: DW Buys Slingerland Name

It would seem counterintuitive to bring out a new line of Slingerlands when there is a plentiful supply of the vintage "real deal" drums out there that can usually be purchased for much less than a...

Re: DW Buys Slingerland Name

I foresee new Radio King solid shell snares and maybe some type of Buddy and Gene tribute snares and/or sets. Beyond that it's hard to visualize anything that won't cannibalize sales from DW or...

Re: 60's Ludwig Kits - sequential serial numbers?

That statement does not reflect my own experiences. As a kid I looked into buying a new drum set on a few occasions, despite having no hope of raising the required funds. In all cases, I was told...

Re: 60's Ludwig Kits - sequential serial numbers?

On the contrary, Ludwig and the rest were generally happy to sell you whatever you wanted however you wanted it. It was simply a matter of having your dealer order it that way.

Re: 60's Ludwig Kits - sequential serial numbers?

All Ludwig drums at the time were Super Classics, ie: they only made one line of drums and all the various outfits were combinations of those drums. One outfit was somewhat confusingly also called...
