Re: Drumming Question???

I usually do it this way:

eight note groupings, do not stop between, play continuously, moving from eighth note singles to eighth note doubles, triplets etc., speed consistent:

Re: Drumming Question???

You said "before you start playing", so I'm taking this from the consideration of "before" meaning, before a gig. I think "warming up" before a gig and practicing are two different things, so I'll...

Re: Bellson - What did he play?

By plastic tips... are you speaking of the other end? Clayton Cameron brushes, 593C, Regal-Tip. Or, perhaps I'm not understanding your query...

Re: Cymbal Patina: Does it change the sound?

I don't like dirty cymbals. Cymbals should be clean and bright, without removing metal if possible. I also don't like stamped logos, either, but that's another tale. I keep my cymbals clean. Do I...

selling my Fibes COF 5.5X14 snare SOLD

This is a feeler to see if there is interest in my Austin-era Fibes 5.5x14 chrome-over-fiberglass snare drum.

I an the original owner (purchased from Harry Cangany almost twenty years ago). It is...

Re: Best snare strainer?

Fibes SFT. Simpler and maybe not as finicky as the Rogers Dyna set-up. A distant second would be the TDR (and yes, it would have made a good standard for the entire line!). For everyday snares,...

Re: Bobby Colomby's Stage Kit

It's funny - when I hear Bobby, I hear Buddy. Period. Now, that's not saying that Bobby was a Buddy clone, just that Bobby had an eerie way of phrasing that sounded like Buddy, and his kit sounded...

Re: Bellson - What did he play?

K.O., that is perfect! It does answer some of my questions. The Mastersound 'hats are a real surprise (and I see that the bar code tag was still attached!). And I'd say that 'A' Crash Ride is a 20"....

Re: Where do you position your snare strainers?

I must be odd-man out here. I was always taught to play the snare drum with the snares directly underneath your sticks for maximum snare action. I use traditional grip 90% of the time, with a...

Re: Slingy Chrome-O-Wood intro year?

X3. The '69 catalog doesn't list a COW; and Buddy's snare was a solid shell BR Artist Model. By '76 the COW snare was out of the catalog completely (although it may still have been around if there...

Re: Slingerland grommet question

I have a six lug Slingy in WMP with similar (although not quite as obvious) grommet issue, and I agree, completely normal. These are wonderful snare drums that are often overlooked just because they...

Re: Bellson - What did he play?

K.O., thanks for that jpeg. I think I have that in my Zildjian archive (although I think mine is from a later time period; not a big difference though). I recall that he used a very similar setup to...

Re: Bellson - What did he play?

It's an honor to be asked, I'm sure, and it must be something that you cherish. I would. I'll study the videos - unfortunately, I'm truly terrible at discerning what a cymbal is by it's appearance,...

Re: Slingy maple kit

GREAT photo. As a Slingy player myself, I love it when I see them on stage (all too infrequently nowadays, it seems). Thanks for the share! -Rick

Bellson - What did he play?

I've been working on some new charts and listening to Louie in the process. I'd noticed that his cymbal sound, especially his ride, was different from many other big band drummers (Lewis, Rich) and...

Re: What era Fibes?

I just thought I'd update this with further thoughts on Fibes snares. I'd put mine away and had been using a '69 COB 10-lug Slingerland (with an incorrect marching drum 1st-gen Rapid Strainer) which...

UPDATE: '69 vintage Slingy kit

UPDATE: A few weeks ago I posted an "information" post about a set of '69 vintage WMP Slingerlands, 13/2x16/22 and period correct Artist snare, a complete 80N kit that a close friend of mine has...

Checkin' in.. but my last (authored) thread seems to be missing - is it something i did or...?. I certainly appreciate the return of the classic look - that other one was seriously sterile!

Re: Rufus "Speedy" Jones

And let's not forget his contributions to Maynard Ferguson's Dream Band. A sensational, if not particularly subtle, big band player.

Re: Rubber Protectant/Lubricator

Yep, "plumbers grease" ( which is indeed a silicone grease) would work, but I prefer the word "pure" and buy a silicone grease with that name, which means it doesn't have any petrochemicals in it....

Re: Rubber Protectant/Lubricator

I do high end auto restoration for a hobby LOL (as in, my fingers hurt like hell this morning! But I digress). Rubber care is problematic for a couple of reasons.

Silicone grease that is pure (no...
