-Is this strainer fragile and prone to breaking? Yes, these are the worst strainers as far as reliability and performance. A lot of times the grommet connecting the arm will be broken or missing....

The trigger goes side to side and engages/disengages the snares at this side...the other side, as you noticed, stays in place and is dampened with some felt when engaged/disengaged.
