Help me identify this Slingerland "Krupa" snare!!

Greetings all, I need an expert in helping me identify my snare. I've got a Slingerland 6 1/2 x 14 "Gene Krupa" snare which contains:

1. A silver on black badge with a serial number (890992) with no city/state reference stamp on it, why is that?
2. No extended snare butt on the other side of strainer.
3. Three bed lines on the shell.
4. Why is the dampener right next to the throw-off? I've seen others that are similar but unlike the layout of mine?

So far, I've confirmed it is chrome on steel after performing the "magnet test", which stuck to the shell, lugs and hoops...please confirm though? I've attached pictures for those who can share their knowledge and hopefully help me figure out if I've got a true vintage "Gene Krupa" model or not. If the picture links do not work, can you tell me what model of snare this could be and roughly when it was made according to the information I've provided?

Sounds like it is an imported snare.

2. No extended snare butt on the other side of strainer.

The imported snares had standard butts that are wider then the vintage
counterpart.

3. Three bed lines on the shell.

That is possible and steel also tells me imported.

So you are saying it is on the same panel as the strainer or the panel next to the strainer?

There is no indication that it is a vintage snare and more then likely an imported snare with the Slingerland badge. A company called Music Yo was given the right to use the name and import drums.

Then again I might be missing something, but a Slingerland should have a Niles or Chicago badge. You can look in the DrCJW's badges and serial numbers to learn more.

Yes, David is correct that this is an imported snare drum, and is not a Chicago/Niles era Slingerland Gene Krupa Sound King.

What you have is a snare drum from the Gretsch period of Slingerland ownership, 1991 - 1994. Your drum is a Model No. SD14 "Spirit", 6.5x14 10-lug 3-line chrome-plated steel shell, Zoomatic throw-off, plain non-extended butt plate, COS stick-saver hoops. The drum was made in Taiwan and imported and marketed by HSS for Gretsch. The parts are HSS/Taiwanese designs meant to reproduce the look and basic function of the Niles-era Gene Krupa Sound King, but the HSS parts are somewhat different. The tone control being in the panel immediately left of the Zoomatic was a common placement for this imported model. A common placement for the badge was the third panel to the right of the Zoomatic. There were other layouts as well. And the large black & silver badges HSS used on the Spirits had no city/state printed on them.

I will be discussing post-Niles era Slingerland history (Gretsch/HSS & Gibson) in future articles.

Hello everyone! I also have similar question, because I have a Slingerland snare chrome over brass; it has zoomatic strainer, right next to strainer are two holes which are missing tone control, and right next to holes is drum badge but it has serial number 52588 and it has printed Niles Illionis USA. The badge is large black and silver. I'm very suspicious because I thought that my snare is vintage, but according to already said about these layout I don't think so anymore. However, badge is not without city and state. Could it be that someone had put that badge deliberately to mislead buyers?

That one (from the new pics just posted by Ozren) looks legit...as in, it's a Niles Krupa. I can't say as to whether someone replaced the badge or not. We would need close shots of the badge and grommet and such. There are always mistakes in drilling, so you really cannot rely on panels 100%. Hope this helps.

I would agree, it looks legitimate...and it's an early silver/black Niles badge.

You can see if someone fudged around with the badge/grommet, either inside or out. It becomes more noticeable on a metal snare, IMHO. Also, Slingy used heavy, thick-walled, sorta matte-finished vents/grommets. They cannot really be matched by a replacement....so, if that vent is of the quality, it's probably an original.
