My newly refurbished 60's Ludwig

Some of you helped me identify this kit when it was for sale here in New Zealand (see thread) http://www.vintagedrumforum.com/showthread.php?t=8690
Of course I paid too much for it but they are extremely rare here as the import duties were so high in the 60's that these were incredibly expensive. It's a mystery as to how this one went undetected for so long.

However, it was in poor shape. The mounted tom turned out to be a Japanese drum with a similar wrap and Ludwig hardware, the consolette rail was wrong, the badges had been removed, the muffler was missing from the FT, it had old chrome hoops, the BD cymbal holder was missing and it was filthy. Well I've managed to track down all of the parts needed. The BD hoops are new from Drummaker.

Well here it is now, and sounding pretty good I might say too. I have tracked down a '64 Supraphonic that is in transit so it's pictured here with my Dynasonic.

Im down in South Africa and we suffer from the same problems, vintage kits are rare and forget about finding replacement parts locally. I was just lucky enough to find a kit that had been in storage so it was all matched and zero fade, did you do a rewrap?

I remember following your original thread quite closely and thinking "those drums look gone, I hope he comes out alright" you did a really stellar job by the looks of it, well done! :cool:

Hey thanks fellas. The wrap is original and luckily matched the rack tom perfectly. Just stripped, polished and waxed. The BD and FT are circa '64 I think and the rack tom is around '67. The wrap on the BD is damaged but hard to notice now until you inspect closely. It sure ain't perfect but it's about as good as I could get it.

Nicely done. I love a good success story. That wing tom fits in very well. Excellent score.

P.S. We've all paid "too much" for a kit. The thing is, we fall in love with them and they are worth every penny to us. That's the magic of these instruments. Enjoy your kit.

of course you're right Mcjnic. I'm not too bothered about the cost really. Afterall, you can spend the same sort of money on an average TV that will be occupying a landfill site in a few years. It's just nice to rescue something like this and bring it back to life.

That is indeed the only way you can look at it! Just keep telling yourself your doing it for the children of the world... Yeah,that's it! Great find, great save and great job! And the before pix do make you look like a genius!
