I have an old set of drums that say Starlight on one of the badges. The other badges are missing but I think it is a matched set. The sizes are 5x14 snare, 9x13 tom, 16x16 Ft and ??x22 bass. I baught this set about 13 years ago when I didn't care about drum make like I do now. The set has been in storage because I have owned many sets since then and always kept these as a backup. The wrap on the drum is like a gold sparkle with blue tiger stripes in it. Some of the hardware is still original like the lugs. Anyways I thaught it might be interesting to someone on this forum because I saw a post about Star drums but didn't know if Starlight was the same company. The badge does say made in Japan and the bearing edges are actually almost flat on top. Oh yeah, I do not know what kind of wood their made of but they do have reinforcing rings and have a clear interior.

Let me know what you guys think.

Could you post some pix? I may be interested, for another rescue kit, if nothing else. Any of the stands? Even the el cheapo tins?
Actually, there are still sme of those being made, and I am not sure if they are Star/TAMA. They would too new. The ones out there today are Chinese.

No stands, missing bass drum hoop (the one I do have has the correct inlay), tom holder (on bass drum) not original, damaged snare strainer and the metal hoops for all of the drums might not be original but I think all of the lugs are. I also thaught about rescuing this kit but I wasn't sure if It is worth doing or not. I will post some pics tomorrow.

What wood did they usually make these drums out of?

It depends on the specs of the distributor. Some are 3 ply maple, with other wood mixed, some are 3 ply mahogany, some are thick luan, 6-8 ply, you can tell by the fact that some will have a tan or gray paint interior, some will be "clear". The 3 ply will usually have re-rings as well.
Is this the badge?
