I recently aquired a 14X24 drumm shell from keller via Ebay. I have this collection of snare drums, most are 14" dia. I have them stacked up in my drum room, to keep me going. lol Im sure all of you have experienced this:
One 14" snare stacked on top of another 14" snare, eventually will fall down, unless you realighn them regurlarly. I had a snare in progress (shell only)stacked in between two restored snares. They stacked perfect that way!
So, anyway, I bought a 14X24 shell to cut into 1" bands to stack inbetween my snares, so they will stack up nicely and not fall down, ever! I have surfed the net for solutions and invented a few myself on how to cut this shell down perfectly. I have decided to see if i can just have someone else do it, rather than invent a new machine that I may not ever use again. I am also gonna get a 3" to make a home made snare out of lol! or what size should i make?

Take it to a woodshop with a tablesaw, fine-tooth blade.

Shame to use almost the whole shell on 1" strips, though. I like the idea of a snare.....maybe two picc's or one standard-size one ?

I would think keeping them in cases might be a better idea. A little safer and cleaner for the drums. Mine have never fallen over when tucked in their cases.

Well im cutting them into 1" strips to stack my snares. I like to look at them all the time. What good are they packed away in bags? They have been in the closet for a number of years. My G/F suggested I set one up in the livin room, and I have been going berzerk! ever since. My passion for drums has been awaken! If they were all packed away in bags in the closet I would be bar b q'ing or something! LOL Anyway, i took my shell to a wood shop and the cost wasn't going to be possable for this preject. I studied it aand confered with many experts, and decided i'd cut the dam thing with a jig saw. Now i was faced with getting a "perfect" mark to cut. I pondered and pondered all day, untill it hit me! Use a 14" drum rim to mark the cutting line! Doh!
That worked great! I used blockes to space the rim up for the nest line.My keller slices will be 1 1/4". I will end up with 15-1 1/4" slices
and a 5 1/2" slice. Then,

I cut a little slit on every line with my dremel tool. This slot will be where the jig saw will start it's cut. I will let you know tomorrow if it actually cut nicely, or disintergrated lol
see pics.

I was thinkin my 20" slingy floor tom would make a nice cocktail kit! How about that?

Get a table saw, make it pretty. Otherwise, you are not going to be happy with the result of this and its one hell of a butchershop job you are going to get.

Why not just make some kind of display where they can be on their sides? The idea of stacking them on top of each other scares me. Plus, if they are stored side by side, you can pull one out at any time to play it without having to take all of the other ones off of it.

Just my $0.02

What about a display rack, roughly 4 tiers of 5 snares each? You could even put a glass door on it so you could see them, yet keep them dust-free. Not to discount your idea, but I still getting uneasy about snares being stacked more than 3 high at a time.

Right now, half of mine are in cases and the other half are on a shelf (minus the 2 set up on my kits at the moment). I would like to build a display, like the one I've described, but there's no room for one. Maybe someday I'll get rid of that half stack...

I finished cutting my drum shell rings and staining them this am. It worked out very nice. I have a 5.5 inch piece left. I will build me a snare drum out of it at some point.

Well I got my snare stackers all finished. I ended up with 16 of them and a 5 1/2 shell left. They work excatly like I wanted them to. The maple shell stayed intact aand every piece is pretty strong. I stained them. These little shell spacers rest right on top of the snare shell, therefore they dont put any stress on the drum head. I cover my snares up with a sheel when ever i and sanding or any thing messy. I am planning on making a clear plastic vinyl cover for them. I will show pic of that when I get that done. I know there are lots of people in here that have several snare drums and want to display them. I like mine displayed so I can see them all the time.
Take a lQQk!

Man I read this post the other day and have since thought this slice and dice to display snares just a great idea. My meager collection of three additional snares live in the closet, I'd love to have themn out where I can see them. I saw your other post on the corner shelf, seems a perfect marriage of two great ideas, let us know how the shellf works out?! Thanks

The shell slices are working perfectly already. The deminsions of that slef I orderd is going to be perfect according to my calculations. I have found snares at pawn shops and bought a few off of ebay. Its a fun thing to me. Since I aint married, i can buy drums with my money, but I do have a live in girl friend, shes the one that suggested I set up a drum kit in the living room. i got my 2 kits out of the closet and have been a drum junkie ever since lol

Your girlfriend is a keeper! My wife likes having my set in the area formerly known as the dining room! The stackers look and seem to work great! There's a rich history to "stacked" drums, it's how most shops displayed them in the 60's, it was DAZZLING to see in a well stocked shop.

Yes, thanks for doing that poppy...I would'a cried if the entire Keller shell had been cut to be used as spacers....

I know its sorta sacreligious to butcher up a shell like that, but I got the idea from a snare I was working on. I had removed the heads and stacked it in between a couple of snares and it stacked real nice. I was looking for a cheap 14" shell on ebay and came accross the keller. it was pretty cheap, considering it was 14X24, not to mention brand new. No holes or reinforcement rings to deal with and I get to make me a snare at some point.
I called the pipe store, thinkin' I could just get PVC pipe and have them cut it for me, but that didnt pann out at all. sooooo i have genuine keller snare drum stackers.

Yeah, good solution, I mean you cant get a more stable connector than another 14 shell....just glad you saved some of it for a drum ;)

I bought some real cool lugs from ebay last week for the shell. I have no idea how to space the holes for the lugs and how to cut a snare bed or how to cut a bearing edge eiither. lol I saw on one of the drum suppliers a template for making a drum but it was to high I think. If I had a piece of old wrap of off a snare drum I could use it as a pattern. I guess Ill figure it out one way or another.

I think I found a new solution for stacking snares for display. The keller shell slices work perfectly, but I think that embroidery hoops would do the trick. I saw some on ebay 8 14" hoops for $10.99. I bet that would work!
