Just thought I would post a few shot of my recently acquired slingy's.
Blackrome Finish sizes are 12x8, 13x9, 14x10, 15x12, 18x16, and 24x14
Still need to repair the bass hoops, replace some t-rods, get original tom mounts, and get the missing muffler parts.

Looks like it's in good shape. The 'ol 4-legged bass drum...luv it. The Chromes can oftentimes not age very well...most that I see are pretty beaten up.

Cool find. I agree, work 'em back to the original tom mount systems....eventually....

I think those are actually chrome and not black chrome......but close....gotta love the toms and bass drum moving everywhere.....Laughing H

Dave Robinson of the Cars played a set of chrome Slingys in the early days of the band before switching to Tama later on....

I dunno, those could be the black chrome. Hard to tell with all the groooooovy colors goin' on.

The CARS with Slingys...really ? I would have liked to have seen that, actually....

Check out 2:15 for a nice angle on the big tom. Always loved his deep tom sounds. He had a HUGE tom up front and a smaller one to the right.

Awesome vids! Just awesome, especially the James Gang and the second Cars one. I love those 70s/80s vids where you actually get some good footage of the musicians actually making their music. Then they went to the over produced crap where you got the cameras flipping all the time and the "artistic" viewpoints and other stuff thrown in and then eventually you hardly saw the musicians at all, especially the drummer.

Sorry to get off topic on the Slingy's but I really loved those vids! Thanks for posting.

Wow...Ocasek sure was mellow back in '79...he was movin' around a lot more by '82.

Dammit...I'm f#ckin' old.....

That was a musically underappreciated band, actually. A lotta folks consider them to have been "bubblegum"...but actually their MUSIC had a lot of references to old R & R and irony as well.....

Bubblegum? The Cars? hmmm.....never heard anybody call them that before....but then again they were from my area......so I guess we had an appreciation for them as the "local guys". I'll agree with you Jaye, very under appreciated. But, if you tune in to the radio, you'll still hear just about every song from the first album on it......strange how people perceive them as just another new wave band.....they were a great pop/rock band. A little ahead of their time too.....with all the electronic technology, syndrums, synares....and later simmons drums mixed in with the slingys and later tamas....

A moment for Ben Orr.........

thank you.......

Anyway, I've been toying with the idea of forming a Cars tribute band....there certainly is enough material.....just, is the interest out there for it? I know I'd go check it out, but would anyone else? thats the question......

Ok, now that I've well and truly hi-jacked this thread.....Car Driving2

This is gonna sound stupid, but I didn't even know Ben Orr had passed. Now I'm depressed...

Anyway...back on topic:

The nice thing about a set of old Slinys in Black Chrome is....they are kinda sought after and considered on the valuable side...as opposed to the regular chrome ones, which are NOT sought after and, actually, a bear to try to just UNLOAD at all...never mind getting a good pric for 'em.

At least around here it's that way....

I've been super busy lately but here's a teaser. I got all the missing muffler parts and all the original tom mounts. All I need now is the chrome inlays, and I'm working on a way to mount the toms on my dw hardware.

Enjoy!

I'm in the minority (I'm used to it), but I LOVE those Blakrome kits. I had the tom in my hands in a music store WAY back when. I had the money on the counter to purchase the kit. I pulled it at the last minute. I walked away and have desired one ever since. I catch myself watching them on ebay and such. I really want one, but cannot justify it. I've had way too many kits flow through my house to warrant yet another just because...
Man, I really like those kits. That tom was so doggone heavy. I felt it could withstand any amount of punishment. I was hitting pretty hard back then (young and stupid). I looked deep into that finish and couldn't believe how intense it was. Wow.
If someone has a Blakrome kit...I have a cat I'd be willing to trade.

Wow, those are beauties!

They are definitely the dark chrome and not "regular" chrome.

I have actually been looking for Slingy's in that finish for ages...with any or all of the following tom sizes: 6", 8" 10" 12" 13" 15" 18" (2) 24"
I have a kit in mind that I've always wanted to build. (See photo below)

I keep looking, but nothing yet.

Does anyone know if that wrap is available for sale? Never seen it anywhere, just the regular mirror-chrome stuff.

I know you just got it, but if you're ever interested in selling...! : )

Take care.

Sorry Pratt, I'm looking forward to keeping these babies. Your looking for the Peart setup eh? I've seen a few 5-ply sets here and there but nothing in 3-ply. I hope i can find a 16 floor tom some day. I heard you can get the chrome one and get window tint over it to match. Good luck on your search.

Hello Strike-dead,

Sorry, this is the first time I'm hearing about the window tint over the chrome. Do you mean regular window tint as in "car-window tint?"
Sounds interesting. I've never seen this finish available for sale anywhere.
Yes, it's a Peart kit, a life-time project for sure.

Thanks

That looks familiar - I have a 24-13-14-18 Blackrome set (with original 6-1/2x14 COB 10 lug snare drum). Mine are untouched since new, but also uncleaned. I was always afraid I'de mess up the black finish. Yours looks great - can I ask how you cleaned these - damp rag or something stronger?
